Guest guest
The relationship between pouch size and weight loss was studied and reported on in Flanagan, L. Measurement of Functional Pouch Volume Following the Gastric Bypass Procedure. Ob Surg 1996; 6:38-43. (To get a copy of this article, print this email and take it to the Interlibrary Loan Department of your local library and request a copy of it. The service is usually free.) Dr. Flanagan measured the pouch stretching and ultimate size of his patients through the Cottage Cheese test. (For instruction on how to measure the size of your pouch go to http://www.sabariatric.com/cottage_cheese_test.htm.) When he compared the size of the pouch to the amount of weight lost, there was no correlation. Those with a 3 oz pouch were just as likely to have had as successful weight loss as those with an 8 oz pouch, and vice versa. His conclusion was that it was not the size of the pouch, but how it was used that would determine success. His excellent article on gastric pouch theory can be found at http://www.oregoncenter.com/article1.html.
