1 year later, too much weight!

Hi all!

You all were so much help to me last year when I was going thru the

initial thyroid cancer treatments (angela_nickles@hotmail)

Anyway, I've come far since then (1 year August since my RAI) &

generally feel well, so I hope you don't mind my taking up space with

post-trauma thyroid issues.

My problem is an unusual amount of weight gain since RAI. Between

Aug '01 & Mar '02 I gained 15 pounds. For reference, I weighed 130

(ht 5'7 " )prior & during treatment & had gained about 10 pounds over

the past 12-13 years (since high school). So 15 pounds in 6 months

was a lot! So, rather than instantly complaining to my doc, I took

matters to the gym, got started on a regular exercise program (hadn't

exercised in years), got my eating habits in balance & waited for the

pounds to fall off. 6 months later, though I feel a lot better, have

more energy & feel generally healthier, I have lost no weight--gained

a few pounds & no significant inches. I've had to go up two pant

sizes to keep up.

I have now asked my doc if it could be a hormonal weight gain, like

with birth control. His reply is, if my TSH levels are as low as

they are (0.04, tested just yesterday), then I should be hyperthyroid

& should, if anything, be losing weight. Now I've read that some

hyperthyroid patients can have weight gain instead of profound weight

loss. I'm just so frustrated because I feel I'm doing everything in

my power to lose it & I think 2 years ago, this much effort would

have made a huge difference. Now it isn't. I am going to try

switching from Synthroid to Thyrolar. Any advice, help,

commiseration would be appreciated.

clean scan 8/01

..125 mg Synth/day

0.04 TSH as of 9/18/02
