Hi Jane -

I started on 300 mg. of guaifenesin a week ago today. (November 8th)

I immediately had my energy back. My feet - feeling like perpetual 'pins &

needles' while walking improved until yesterday. (I am better able to walk on

they but the swelling has returned and I stay off my feet as much as possible.

The 'burning' in my leg muscles had improved, but again for the past 2 days it

has kicked up and is more painful than before. The old neck ache - right side

5th & 6th cervical discs - has come back and I am using heat on that.

My question for you is - did it take a 5 day period to start hitting the rough

part of the treatment? If you have any insights please let me know.

My fm is not as sever as most and I have seen the posts from others who didn't

get the benefit of the guaifenesin treatment. If anyone is curious, I recommend

the link from Jane; http://www.guaidoc.com

This link had some handy items that could be made at home for relief;

http://www.fibrohugs.com/promotion/homemade/relief.html

My husband made me the 'muscle roller' and I can use it on my leg muscles while

lying in bed.

I made the 'rice socks' for my neck and shoulder. This was really simple.

I made the 'corn pillow' and it was a little tricky. Again, my hubby came up

with making channels - lengthwise -in the pillow to keep the corn from having

too much freedom.

I don't use the bath remedies but if they are as good as the ones we tried I

would say to give them a try, too.

Hugs to you all and happy Thanksgiving!

Jo,

It did take a few days for the treatment to " kick " - and I had new symptoms

start, which I had never had before! Most notably, I got the restless leg

syndrome stuff and the irritable bowel syndrome symptoms started bothering me

for the first time in 12 years. But St. Amand said to expect that sort of thing,

and these things have died down.

It did get much worse for a while, but I figured if the solution was drastic, it

would still be worth a try. I had to do something, things were getting very bad

for me. One thing that got very bad was the pain in my back from an old car

accident. I thought the vertebra had slipped more, so I went to the chiro and

she took new x-rays. It turns out the vertebra was completely in place, (the

disc was somewhat compressed), but my MD thinks it's just the junk from the old

injury site that the guai was flushing out that caused the pain.

I am beginning to cycle again, and my back is hurting again. My headache has

come back as well, but the symptoms are much better than before.

There is another Yahoo group that I belong to: GuaiNwithFibro. I have gotten a

lot of good advice there from people who have been on the treatment for a while.

Another thing that has really helped (tremendously) is my Sunbeam warming

blanket. I really had no idea that living in Los Angeles, sleeping under 2

blankets and a quilt, that perhaps I could benefit from an electric blanket. It

has made a huge difference, though, and unless the kids wake me up at night, I

sleep all the way through. This makes for better days, of course.

I hope you do well on the guai. Let me know how it goes.

I need to print out the info on guafensin. My doctor went ahead and put me

on it. It's jhelped a great deal. What do you mean by 5-6 pills a day?

What is your dosage? Also, can you send me the info so I can give it to

him? He's very interested.

You can ask your doctor to prescribe it. There is a strict protocol for

using it, i.e. you have to avoid aspirin in all forms and other stuff.

I've never tried it as I know I couldn't avoid aspirin. It helps some

people and doesn't help others. If your doctor won't prescribe it, it

is found in cough medicine. There is a web site on it.
