Guest guest
i am two weeks away from having my ortho. surgery. i had a pre-op appt. on 7/21 to have molds done. they explained in detail how they are going to break my jaw, cut and realign it.. ok i really didnt want to know that.. since that apointment i have been in a panic.. i have tried to prepare myself emotionally for the surgery but have fallen backwards with my fears.. they also told me i will be on liquids for 8 weeks total and then soft non-chewing diet.. my doc. said i am going to loose between 10 to 20 pounds but really have no pounds to spare.. i am trying to eat alot prior but feel like a cow when i do.. so that also makes me nervous.. my last pre-op is 8/11 and my surgery is on 8/14.. any words of support and any words of advice would be great... thanks
Guest guest
It all sounds soooo scary, I remember. But honestly, it's not as bad as it sounds. And ask your doc for sure, but liquids include things like yogurt and ice cream, that you get soft and melty. Shakes, blended soups (even the chunky ones can be blended down). I recommend a Braun stick blender and a large pyrex measuring cup. That way, even when you're low on energy, you can just dump a can of soup in the cup, add whatever water or broth you need, and blend away, then pop it in the microwave, and you're all set. Did your doc say whether you'd be wired or banded? That will make a difference in your overall comfort. I'm not telling you the first week or so is easy, but most people have more trouble with swelling, congestion and numbness than with anything else. And not everybody has trouble with all of those. I didn't have congestion or numbness after I had a lower advancement. Try to take it easy and relax. Your doc knows what he's doing, and truly, the most dangerous part of this whole experience for you is probably the automobile ride to the hospital and the one back home. Not everybody loses weight, either. I lost 10 pounds while I was in the hospital, and was tickled to lose it. I was not so tickled that, as my surgeon predicted, it came right back once I got home.
