New Items with Gluten and Some Gluten Free

Hi,

I was looking something up last night and came across this web site http://www.enabling.org/ia/celiac/sn/spnk9902.html where they had product information that was supposed to be new.

1. Bush's Chili Beans and Chili Magic Beans no longer gluten- free.

2. Erewhon Twice Rice Cereal: Boxes with GAF stickers are okay, and those without the stickers are not gluten- free.

3. Frookie has a new line of gluten-free cookies. (I don't know who this is)

4. Jet-Puffed marshmallows and creme are both gluten-free, according to Hirde of Favorite Brands International Consumer Affairs. The imitation vanilla is derived from corn.

I also have a question. What brand of Corn Tortillas do you buy? I made a casserole with corn tortillas in it last night that didn't look like they had gluten in it, but I was sick all night with an upset stomach. Of course it could have been in the sauce since I didn't make my own, and had some from the health food section of my grocery store. I checked all ingredients, and everything looked okay, but something happened!

Did you realize that the article you linked to was dated February

1999? I don't think that I would go by that info there. And, I buy

Cruz tortillas usually and it says right on the back of the package

gluten free. I don't ever have problems with them.

I buy Mission tortillas...just because they say gluten free.

HOWEVER, my youngest has always had an affection for yellow

corn tortillas...so I got some Mission yellows the other day.

Not thinking. The yellow corn are NOT gf!! The white ones are.

Right now I have the Mission brand in my kitchen. However, for

years I always used Pepito Brand. But we've recently moved and the

new grocery store by us only has Mission brand corn tortillas.

They're good, but I'd rather have the ones I'm accustomed to. Oh

well!!

According to the Mission web site, ALL Mission corn

tortilla products are GF. Not only that, they do not

share lines with wheat products.

I am in the Houston

area and have been using these for years. I trust their product labeling.

Are you sure that is Mission

corn tortillas you had? I just got this off of their website:

Q.

Is

there any wheat, rye, barley, or oats in corn tortillas?

^ up

A.

No, Mission corn

tortillas do not contain wheat, rye, barley or oat ingredients.

Q.

Are

Wheat Flour tortillas produced in the same lines as corn products?

^ up

A.

No, our corn production lines are dedicated to corn

products only. Wheat Flour tortillas are produced in dedicated lines.

Q.

Is

Wheat used in any way to make the products that are gluten free?

^ up

A.

There are no Wheat ingredients or incidental wheat

present in the products or on the lines that produce gluten free products.

Q.

Is

there a potential for cross-contamination of corn products with wheat

ingredients? ^ up

A.

All Mission Foods plants have strict food safety

programs in place, including a very comprehensive Allergen Control Program.
