Amy has been on 10 mg. Tapazole for eight weeks, a pretty short time,

according to the doctor, to achieve somewhat normal levels. If he wanted to

leave her at this continued dose for more than the two weeks I would

definitely object, but I have been very pleased with his approach so far. I

just wanted some input from this great group. Thanks for the response.

Sorry I'm a recent joiner so missed earlier comments.

This free T4 result is where I'd end up hypo, so I think you are

right to be concerned, but how long has she been on the dose, as

if it is reasonably stable that in itself would persuade me to

stick with it, as I had trouble finding a reasonably stable dose

let alone one that made me feel healthy.

How old is Amy?

Hi Amy's Pam,

I tend to agree with you and posted a reference for this on about.com

yesterday. It's a study described in Werner & Ingbar's The Thyroid commenting

that 85% people on 10 mg Tapazole become euthyroid compared to 92% of people

on 40 mg Tapazole. It says after they become euthyroid most people can be

maintained on 2.5 to 5 mg tapazole daily and these are adults.

Eosinophils are primarily increased in allergies and we often see people with

up to 10% eos during allergy season.

Ovalocytes are red blood cells that are more oval than round. Normally some

cells are mis-shapen and a slight amount isn't significant. Take care, Elaine

All right! Congrats to Amy - that is wonderful news! I'm especially glad to

hear that she's feeling better emotionally, too!

Just make sure to keep a close watch for the next 2 weeks and if she starts

feeling hypo, call the doc for labs pronto!

I'm so happy for you guys - you both have worked very hard!

Congratulations!! I'm so happy for her and for you. I think it's good that

your doctor is planning to check her again in two weeks. I'd make sure she

stays on the lookout for hypO symptoms because once it gets bad, it is pretty

awful stuff. Best of luck to both of you and happy days for Amy!!

Normal levels!

Amy had a visit with the endocrinologist on Monday and the results

came back late Wednesday: the doctor says she's showing normal

levels for the first time! :-)

The doctor wants to keep her at the same dosage of Tapazole (10 mg.

twice a day) for another two weeks, then do labs again. I'm not

entirely sure I agree with this, because I fear she'll slip into

hypo, but I hate to buck him since he's been very good so far. I'm

posting her latest numbers at the end for feedback from any of you

who have an opinion. . .

It was amazing what it did for Amy to hear from " the professional "

that she is " normal. " She immediately perked up and started skipping

and laughing around the house.

Here's the latest readings:

Total T4 7.l range: 4.5 - 12.0

TSH by Immulite 0.451 range: 0.4 - 4.0

Free T4 1.0 range: 0.8 - 1.9

Total T3 138. range: 82 - 179

Her CBC numbers varied as usual, with only EOS being high off the

chart and something called Ovalo (?) showing " slight. "

Anyone care to comment? Thanks for the continued support!

I still get so confused by lab numbers. My latest labs have my T4 and my FT4

just on the low end of normal. Would this tend to mean I am closer to hyper

or hypo?

Free T4 0.70 (0.61-1.76)

T4 4.6 (4.5-12.0)

TSH 1.52 (0.35-5.5)

I have little energy during the day, and do wake up during the night with the

heart palpitations, occasionally night sweats, and have a difficult time

settling down to sleep again once I am awake. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Marilyn

Low end of normal for T4 and Free T4 is the hypo direction.

Tired/Depressed/Achy/Cold

I've felt pretty ill with a Free T4 this low before, but

obviously free T4 isn't necessarily as directly related to how

you feel as one might like and thus things vary.

This TSH is near normal (it is actually above average indicating

hypo as well), but in Graves you probably shouldn't focus on

this much.

Mention the heart palp to the doctor just to be sure. I think

when the thyroid meds wear off you can get a bit of a jolt of

thyroid hormones. What medication are you on?

Jody,

I am only on 50mg. PTU once a day, but have been taking it in the morning. I

am going to try splitting it up. I go back to the endo in 2 weeks, and will

bring up other issues at that time. I still have lots of questions to ask

him. He tells me I do NOT have Grave's but a hyperfunctioning nodule. (I'm

not sure what the difference in treatment is)

As for the heart palpitations, I am going to to back and see the

cardiologist and bring him up to date on the thyroid...maybe he has some

input.

Thanks again,

Marilyn

Is it different when the hyperthyroidism isn't caused from Graves?

I started in Nov. with a TSH of <0.03, went on 10mg. Tapazole TID, and in 4

weeks my TSH went up to 46.67 (with severe hypo symtoms), and was switched to

50mg. PTU once a day in Feb. As I said in my previous post, I am going to

try splitting the PTU and see if it helps with my symptoms.

Hey I just spent a decade learning about Graves ;)

I think you are probably wise to assume that the TSH MAY be

misrepresentative with all hyperthyroid complaints, until it is

clear that an " average " TSH corresponds with having had good

stable thyroid hormone levels for a few months and feeling okay.

Not saying it will be misleading, but faulty thyroids don't

always behave like the textbooks say they will.... and TSH is

based on the pituarity presumably assuming that the mix of

hormones agrees with what a healthy thyroid does.

I've yet to meet anyone with a TSH of 46 with hyper symptoms

mind, but I dare say someone somewhere will have managed it by

some means.

I've just started 50mg PTU daily and have to split it to avoid

" hot flushes " , so yes this probably accounts for the heart palps

in the night if you take the dose in the morning your nodule can

then misbehave drug free in the night.

Splitting the PTU sounds like a good move, but let the docs know

what and why, as they may catch anything that turns out to be

silly or inappropriate for your condition (of course they may

also get it wrong and prescribe PTU to be taken once daily like

they did with me.....).

My update on switching from Carbimazole to PTU contains some

hints on cutting up pills ;). I lost (totally - how do things

vanish in a bedroom) 2 halves of PTU pills by cutting then with

a pen knife, in four days, despite carefully positioning things

to stop the fragments escaping...
