Teeth and Gums

Hi Maureen,

I know I am a bit behind in my emails, but I would like to weigh in on this one.

My husband is the biopsy diagnosed celiac in our family. He was diagnosed at age 57 and had already developed periodontal disease. The doctors had also convinced him to have his gall bladder removed as they thought that this was his entire problem, but that is another story.

Anyway, the periodontist wanted to do gum surgery, etc. and we were in the process of deciding when to do it when he was diagnosed with celiac disease. We discussed this with our periodontist and he said that periodontal disease is a disease of malabsorption. It can be exacerbated by poor home care as well.

We were faithful with getting our teeth cleaned every six months and pretty good with home care including flossing, so we were surprised when he developed the periodontal disease.

The good news is that after going GF and stepping up his home care and some deep cleaning by the periodontist, the gum disease has disappeared. He no longer needs to see the periodontist at all.

Take care,
