I think the gaps between the teeth allow liquids through. I was banded (elastics) post- op, and was able to drink ok. > when you are wired shut are you actually like biting down all the > time or is there a space so u can still use a straw?? Guest guest Posted July 13, 2003 Report Share Posted July 13, 2003 i'm wired shut and my surgeon said it was good for me to use a straw. he asked me how i drink and i said " out of a cup " and he was like thats good, u can use a straw too. At first using a straw was impossible but just yesterday i got a milkshake from mcdonalds and i was in the car drinking it and spilling it EVERYWHERE with my little spoon, and so by the time i realized that this wasnt going to work, the ice cream in the milk shake had melted a bit, and I figured " heck why not " and tried the straw deal once more. to my surprise, it worked!!! i put it right where my front teeth are, just a little under it because i still have a little overbite left that they are going to correct with braces so i was able to suck through there. Keep in mind i didnt have a big gap either, so just give it a try. I was told that i was allowed to drink with a straw and the only time i shouldnt is if i had gotten my wisdom teeth out because it breaks the sucking of the straw breaks and ruins the blood clots formed. he said with jaw surgery though that it's okay to use one. So it might be hard to use a straw, depends on the person, but keep trying. I'm about 17 days post op, and i was able to do it yesterday. it just depends on if u have a tiny spot in there where u can place the straw and just suck!! But hey, if your surgeon okays it, who am I to disagree? Glad it worked for you, Aparna... The beauty of the zippies is that you can squeeze the stuff up through the straw, and need not suck to get it in. Guest guest Posted July 13, 2003 Report Share Posted July 13, 2003 Yes, when you are wired shut, your jaws are clamped down together completely, thus biting down all the time. However, you'd be surprised how liquids meander their way through the gaps in your teeth, especially closer to the back. My surgeon told me I could not use a straw those first weeks postop. The sucking mechanism is stronger than one would think and it can interfere with your incisions healing properly and can tug at your stitches. Just run it past your surgeon, as I know others here report that their surgeon said it was ok (perhaps a different kind of stitch or location?). Anyway, I recommend the zip-n-squeeze bags until you can learn to drink out of a cup with a numb bottom lip (not an easy task, but you will get used to it!). It took me about 1-2 weeks to start drinking out of a cup (with a washcloth under my mouth to catch the excess!). The bags allow you to squeeze the liquid in, vs. using your jaws/mouth to suck the liquid out. But we'll see because I am finally going to be seeing my oral surgeon tomorrow. Then I can find out what they are actually going to do too. I know they are doing just the upper jaw but that's all I know, I dont know all the details.
