Steph,

When did you start the armour?

I did armour for a little while but it caused my rapid heart beats, I

think my dose was too high or something but I think it works on the

T4 and T3 where synthroid only the T4. I guess I didn't need both??

Oh, when I was on armour I also had insomnia big time. I had so much

energy - - like the little energizer bunny.

My aches and pains did subside for a while but now they just come and

go out of the blue. I think mine has a lot to do with my on going

auto-immune issues though. I have tested positive for auto-immune

issues, so don't let me worry you.

If you haven't, I am sure yours will subside because I do think I

flare when my auto-immue flares. When I am not flaring, my joints

and muscles feel great.

Hugs, Lynn

Hi Lynn, I started the armour a couple of weeks ago. I was on 30

mg/day but my dr changed it to 15 mg/day in case that was causing the

rapid hearbeat. How do you know whether or not you need T4 and T3?

What auto immune issues have you tested postive for?

Steph,

You will know if you need Armour (dessicated thyroid) or Synthroid

(synthetic T4) based on two things:

1) Your test results for Free T3 and Free T4,

2) your symptoms

If your test results show a low Free T3 or low T4, then you will need

a thyroid med that supplies the T3 as well as the T4. T4 naturally

converts into the more powerful T3, but if you have a problem with

conversion or a low T4 to start with, then you will not be able to

make enough T3 for your needs.

You can usually tell by your symptoms if your chosen thyroid med is

working for you. I personally prefer Armour (T3+T4) over Synthroid,

which is synthetic. Some people feel better on one over the other,

however.

Synthroid is often better tolerated by those who have adrenal

exhaustion issues.

You can see some guidelines (which I will post) regarding this

subject at this link from the International Hormone Society. Note

that thyroxin=T4, and triiodothyronine = T3.

http://intlhormonesociety.org/index.php?

option=com_content & task=view & id=37 & Itemid=71 & tomHack_idp=1

As hypothyroidism has serious adverse consequences on the quality of

life and health of patients, we recommend that physicians, in light

of the solid evidence here collected, should first try to treat

hypothyroid patients with a combined thyroxin and triiodothyronine

preparation. As the combination treatment contains the immediately

active triiodothyronine, we recommend that physicians follow some

safety guidelines, in addition to the obvious one of avoiding

overdoses when they administer thyroxin and triiodothyronine

medications.

Following the measures listed below increases the safety and

tolerance of the treatment:

1. The first guideline is to start the treatment at very low doses

and then to slowly and gradually increase the dose until clinical

euthyroidism is reached.

2. The second guideline is to tell the patient to avoid all

caffeinated and similar stimulating drinks that may increase the

orthosympathic activity.

3. The third guideline is to regularly follow-up the patient with a

good clinical interview and examination and laboratory tests every

two to twelve months depending on the patient's needs.

4. The fourth guideline is to carefully screen for adrenal deficiency

in hypothyroid patients, as some patients with low or borderline low

cortisol levels may poorly tolerate any type of thyroid medication,

and in particular thyroxin-triiodothyronine combinations. The

intolerance may come from over-activity of the orthosympathic nervous

system that often accompanies states of low Cortisol, and an

excessive and rapid conversion of thyroxin to triiodothyronine that

puts these patients easily into a state of excess T3 and thus

hyperthyroidism, and further increases the orthosympathic activity.

In patients with Cortisol deficiency, we recommend the physician to

treat the low cortisol state prior to or simultaneously with the

thyroid treatment. If not, thyroxin alone may be the better treatment

of hypothyroidism in the presence of an untreated cortisol

deficiency. In most other instances, thyroxin and triiodothyronine

remains the first, but not exclusive, choice for treatment of

hypothyroidism for the International Hormone Society's Consensus

Group.

Concerning the debate about which combination treatment works best:

synthetic T3-T4 or desiccated thyroid, the Consensus Group states the

following:

Reports of patients feeling better on desiccated thyroid may have

scientific evidence as these preparations contain along with T3 and

T4 a number of other substances that may have some thyroid activity

as diiodo-and monoiodo-thyronines. In addition, the binding of much

of the thyroid hormones to the bigger thyroglobulin molecule allows a

slower intestinal absorption and, later, once arrived in the

bloodstream, a slower release of thyroid hormones in the blood,

thereby insuring a more persistent action and a better tolerance by

spreading the action over a longer period of time. Thus, desiccated

thyroid may work better.

The view that the potency of thyroid preparations of animal origin

may have more fluctuations has arguments. For this reason, preference

is given to preparations that are officially registered and well-

controlled. It must be said that the frequent FDA-recalls of poorly

reliable, less potent than announced thyroxin preparations of various

pharmaceutical firms in the USA, makes thyroxin not a better

alternative. In the light of the Mad Cow's Disease, the International

Hormone Society does not recommend the use of desiccated thyroid of

beef origin. For these reasons, the position adopted by the Consensus

Group members of The International Hormone Society is that both type

of T3-T4 preparations have their pros and cons, and the freedom of

choice between these two should be left to the physician.

Steph,

2.14 is a little high (or low). You want to be in the 1.0s or

below. My pshyciatrist told me that any women over a 2.0 usually

have depression too - - so? Once I got my TSH under 2.0 my

depression subsided (thank you God).

Hi Steph,

My TPO which is the auto-immune for the Thyroid was 350! I think

normal is like 1-40 or something. I also had a high ANA 1:160 & then

1:360. My Rheumy says I could get Lupus but I just don't

have " enough " symptoms yet. So, we will see...

Are you still having rapid heart beats? I am not sure about the

conversion, I know Patty knows more on that. I am on Synthroid

though and not Armour.

From your TSH, it sounds like you needed a little thyroid support.

It takes awhile to level out in your body so try to be patient.

Lynn,

I swore off rheumatologists for 10 years so they could not give me

updates. My test results improved a great deal during that time.

I know I need to too Lynda. I am just scared right now with as the

new symptoms that match up with Lupus keep cropping up.

I know I am singing to the choir here. I am sure you are scared

too.

I need to change my attitude ASAP! I got very depressed this

weekend. I joined a Lupus group but it is so sad over there,

so many people are so so sick. They are taking horribly toxic

drugs. But I did find a 40 year old who has Lupus and has 10 year

old salines! Maybe there is a reason I joined the board....

I have to leave it up to God. He has a path and I have to remember

that. Oh, and I need to take care of the body He gave me.

I hope you are staying warm. I am so sick of this weather! Had to

work until 7:00 and it was 2 degrees when I left work. BLAH!

I hope you get great news tomorrow.

Love, Lynn

Hi Lynn, What symptoms do you have that match up with Lupus?

Hopefullly within time those numbers will go down.

I haven't had the rapid heartbeat. My dr wants me on the lowest level

of armour which is 15 mg.

Steph,

Pluertic chest pain, muscles pains, rapid heart beats, joint pains

(fingers mostly), hyperpigmentation on my face due to sun exposure.

Hair loss, but that can be thyroid issues.

I am glad to hear your rapid heart beats have subsided!
