What would you do?

Hi all - hope I can get your experienced opinions!! I was diagnosed

as " wheat intolerant " by my GI in December, as he said my biopsy was

negative. He said it was ok to eat barley, malt etc. I havn't, I'm

afraid to and have had a lingering fear that he did not find any

damage in my intestines due to scalloping (the things I learn in this

forum!), or I am early enough in catching this that no damage has been

done - yet. Not sure what to do next. Of course if I could expand my

food choices to everything but wheat, great, but like I said, I

hesitate because I can't really determine just how versed this GI is

in celiac.

I just want to do the right thing for myself. Thanks for any feedback

or advice!!

I totally agree. I was told I had a wheat allergy. I thought I was fine just avoiding wheat. When I decided to eliminate gluten I realized I had mild reactions constantly but didn't realize it until they were gone. I had one "slightly elevated" blood level, the rest were normal, as were the biopsies. Since I have the gene and react to gluten, my GI diagnosed me with celiac.

I would do the gene testing and assume it's celiac if I had the gene. Just my opinion. Keep in mind that it is possible to have celiac without symptoms. They are now theorizing that asymptomatic celiacs may get the secondary problems anyway - diabetes, lymphoma of the gut, etc.
