Can anyone help? I'm beginning to really freak about an upcoming trip

to town, VA. Looks like there's not a Whole Foods within a

gazillion miles. Looks like Krogers has gluten-free foods by special

order only..... And I don't recognize any restaurants as ones I'm

familiar with.

See:

http://www.google.com/local?hl=en & lr= & q=restaurants & near=town,+VA+23081

I can bring dry foods with me on the trip OK (Bob's Red Mill, Gluten

Free Pantry, and such) and just rely on the local grocery stores for

eggs and Lactaid, meats, veggies, fruit and such...

But I'd like to be able to feel like I can last all those days so far

from home.

Help!

On the plus side, I've emailed the priest at the parish closest to

where we'll be staying and he's perfectly fine with my bringing some

of my very own Benedictine Sisters' Very Low Gluten Altar Breads for

consecration. Hooray! One problem solved....

We'll be travelling with a whole bunch of wiggly short people, so we

don't want to have to make a long trek to the grocery store very often.

All advice for the area greatly welcomed and gratefully appreciated!

Esther in RI

It appears Ukrops has a shop in burg, which is near

town. I've never been in an Ukrops, but I know they're supposed

to have a decent selection:

http://www.ukrops.com/health/gluten_free.asp

I have a friend who stockpiles the Namaste mixes (brownies, spice

cake, etc) when she visits Ukrops. ;)

If I were you, I'd call the burg store to see if they do, in

fact, stock GF items.

Did you call the Kroger? Most Kroger stores I've been in have a

modest selection of GF items, including Pamela's, Bob's Red Mill, a

few cereals, salad dressing, etc. If the store has a separate

organic/natural food section, it will most likely carry a decent

amount of GF dry goods.

Also, there's a Health Shelf in burg. No clue what they

stock or just how small it is:

Health Shelf

burg Shopping Center

159½ A Monticello Ave

Also found this in the Yellow Pages:

Food Herbs & More

2821 Denbigh Blvd, Yorktown, VA

foodsherbs & more@...

Again--no clue if the place stocks anything at all. there are a

number of hits for Newport News, but I doubt you want to drive that far.

Esther,

if you are coming down I95, you can also stop in Woodbridge, VA at Global Foods--- (you can map it on Mapquest.com)

Global Food13813 Foulger sqWoodbridge, VA 22192

They have a great fresh produce dept (excellent prices for this area), and all kinds of flours and rice noodles (all kinds of variety), and corn tostadas. Huge source of Asian and Hispanic foods-- and they are labeled in English. hey also carry traditional groceries but most are similar or higher priced than the local grocery stores. It's one of my favorite places to go when I take my daughter to her PT appt. in Woodbridge twice a week.

:-) in VA

Wegmans - www.wegmans.com - has a few new and largish stores in Northern

Va - check the store locations on their web site. Their " Natures

Marketplace " generally has a good GF selection, and they are good about

labelling their own brand foods as GF if they are - also there's a

complete list (PDF file) of their GF foods downloadable from the website.
