Guest guest
Can anyone help? I'm beginning to really freak about an upcoming trip to town, VA. Looks like there's not a Whole Foods within a gazillion miles. Looks like Krogers has gluten-free foods by special order only..... And I don't recognize any restaurants as ones I'm familiar with. See: http://www.google.com/local?hl=en & lr= & q=restaurants & near=town,+VA+23081 I can bring dry foods with me on the trip OK (Bob's Red Mill, Gluten Free Pantry, and such) and just rely on the local grocery stores for eggs and Lactaid, meats, veggies, fruit and such... But I'd like to be able to feel like I can last all those days so far from home. Help! On the plus side, I've emailed the priest at the parish closest to where we'll be staying and he's perfectly fine with my bringing some of my very own Benedictine Sisters' Very Low Gluten Altar Breads for consecration. Hooray! One problem solved.... We'll be travelling with a whole bunch of wiggly short people, so we don't want to have to make a long trek to the grocery store very often. All advice for the area greatly welcomed and gratefully appreciated! Esther in RI

And who are the celiac(s); you or the wiggly short people? If you are driving, consider a brief stop in andria, VA, en route: there's a TJ's with a decent GF selection, a Whole Foods with a LARGE selection of GF products, including the entire GF bakehouse line, which they keep in the freezer case (I prefer to buy the things frozen as then I can keep them until I'm ready to use them). Best of all, there's an ice cream parlor in Del Ray (next to andria) where you can GF ice cream cones! For my little celiac, that made the whole trip worth while. Liz, the owner, is quite knowlegable about the GF diet, and keeps GF cones on hand. Guest guest
Esther, if you are coming down I95, you can also stop in Woodbridge, VA at Global Foods--- (you can map it on Mapquest.com) Global Food13813 Foulger sqWoodbridge, VA 22192 They have a great fresh produce dept (excellent prices for this area), and all kinds of flours and rice noodles (all kinds of variety), and corn tostadas. Huge source of Asian and Hispanic foods-- and they are labeled in English. hey also carry traditional groceries but most are similar or higher priced than the local grocery stores. It's one of my favorite places to go when I take my daughter to her PT appt. in Woodbridge twice a week. :-) in VA Re: 23081 Oooh! You're an angel! I'm the celiac. You can see my only to-date GFice cream cone here:http://my.opera.com/EstherP/archive/monthly/?day=20060124I'm printing out YOUR message for my file, too!Yes, we're driving. That's what the new minivan is for. :-) (Had fourkids before we finally broke down and got a minivan. Laugh! Now I feellike a *real* American mom.)Thanks! Their " Natures Marketplace " generally has a good GF selection, and they are good about labelling their own brand foods as GF if they are - also there's a complete list (PDF file) of their GF foods downloadable from the website. -- n : jt@... http://jt-mj.net In the beautiful Finger Lakes Wine Country of New York State!
