I completely understand your worry. I have CD and have two boys that

I always worried about. I tested both of the back in August and at

that time they were 2 1/2 and 6 1/2. I was really worried about my

youngest because he was so much smaller than his older brother once he

hit 18 months. Both of them came back negative! Somebody was looking

over me that day. It was recommended by their pediatrician to have

them tested about every 1 to 2 years. I will eventually get them gene

tested to see if I would need to continue the testing. Hope this

helps!

My pediatrician looked into it and was told that the blood tests are good after age 2. DD is almost 3 and we are getting blood drawn tomorrow. YIKES!

You can absolutely test her right now, but if it comes back negative test again. My son was diagnosed at 2.5 and his numbers were through the roof (anything over 11 was considered positive, his level was 250!)

Is this a pediatric GI? If not, I would recommend seeking one out. I think

a pediatric GI would understand the importance of checking for CD while she

is still a toddler. As we are now trying to adjust my son's eating habits

at 15, it would have been much easier to have started him on GF at 2 rather

than now. Although the endoscopy might not show much yet, I tend to think

the blood test might. Just my thoughts...

Bribery is a good thing. My son was a BEAR at his first blood draw....it took 4 of us to hold him down and a zillion tries before they got enough blood. And trust me, he remembered that.

So, at the one-year follow up I told him he was having his blood drawn, and it might pinch for a second. BUT, if he stayed VERY still it would be over very fast (Yes, he could cry all he wanted, just no moving) then we'd go to the toy store after and he could pick ANY toy he wanted. I've never seen him sit so still...before or since that blood draw! And don't think for a second that he didn't immediately say "Ok, can we go to the toy store now?" ;-)

I would definitely have her tested. I was 16 months when I was

diagnosed. And if her daddy has it, she has a very good chance of

having it too. At this point, she won't even remember any of the test

1 month from now. Altogether less traumatic for you, and you won't

have to wonder and worry about it later.

Plus, like someone else said it will be alot easier to change her

eating habits now. Better to do it now, that way she wont even

remember what gluten containing foods taste like. I dont! When I was

about 14 yrs old, i mistakenly ate a brownie out of the wrong pan.

(My mom had made a GF pan for me and some others for my siblings.) I

thought it was super gross. ha!

You can't miss something that you've never had!

Oh yes - we've already discussed the full procedure in detail. She went with me last time I had to do it. Thank God! Because we didn't know at the time she would be tested. Tonight we are going to show her "baby" how to draw blood. Then tomorrow she is taking her baby with us so she can watch. I've already told her that it will pinch for a second, but that she has to stay really still to let the doctor get the blood. We have a prescription for the lidocaine lotion, so hopefully the timing on that will work out. I've also told her that we could go get a doughnut or to Borders for a book or to Toys R Us or whatever she wants if she cooperates. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Trudy, I'll be thinking of you tomorrow. I am taking my ds to be retested in 2

weeks. He is also 3, and screamed terribly through the whole thing last time.

And he remembers it! He had reflux as a baby, is intollerant of dairy, had

positive IgG (I think that's the one) and his sister and Dad were diagnosed back

in May. The Drs. we spoke to all agreed he could have been too young for a

positive diagnosis (may still be). Why can't they just do the gene scan at the

same time as the CD blood test? I would think that would just be part of it.

Then if they are negative you know they don't have to continue to be tested.

Oh, how do you get a prescription for the lidocane lotion? Can't you just ask

for it there? Does it need to go on at a certain time before the test to be

effective?

Laurie,

Lidocaine has to go on an hour in advance.

Doc’s office can call it to the pharmacy. I’d say tell them to run

any blood test they can now while they have the blood. CBC, diabetes,

everything that might be helpful.

Subject: RE: When do

you test a child for celiac disease?

Trudy, I'll be thinking of you tomorrow. I am taking my ds

to be retested in 2 weeks. He is also 3, and screamed terribly through

the whole thing last time. And he remembers it! He had reflux as a

baby, is intollerant of dairy, had positive IgG (I think that's the one) and

his sister and Dad were diagnosed back in May. The Drs. we spoke to all

agreed he could have been too young for a positive diagnosis (may still

be). Why can't they just do the gene scan at the same time as the CD

blood test? I would think that would just be part of it. Then if

they are negative you know they don't have to continue to be tested.

Oh, how do you get a prescription for the lidocane

lotion? Can't you just ask for it there? Does it need to go on at a

certain time before the test to be effective?

Thank God! Because we didn't know at the time she would be tested.

Tonight we are going to show her " baby " how to draw blood. Then

tomorrow she is taking her baby with us so she can watch. I've already

told her that it will pinch for a second, but that she has to stay really still

to let the doctor get the blood. We have a prescription for the lidocaine

lotion, so hopefully the timing on that will work out. I've also told her

that we could go get a doughnut or to Borders for a book or to Toys R Us or

whatever she wants if she cooperates. Keep your fingers crossed for me!
