Factory and Cake Decorating

Well, today was our big day, and it went off really well. The

manager of the McD's in the Crayola Factory was super easy to work with and had

a great attitude. She deserves a huge raise, IMHO. This was our

first time eating anywhere except P.F. Changs since the diagnosis, and, thanks

to you Silly Yaks who encouraged me, it went just fine. The fries are

made in a dedicated fryer, and they gave us a wonderful grilled chicken breast

in a clean box. I was not able to watch them prepare it, but as someone here

said, I guess I just have to let that go and trust it will be okay. My dd

was so happy to have her Happy Meal (I ate her cheeseburger) with the other

kids, and I was near to tears that we could do this simple thing (that had

seemed so hard to me)to give her joy. (Sorry to be a mushy mom, you know

how it is...)

Tonight also was our Cake Decorating contest, and

we brought the gf cake we'd made earlier in the week along with our own

frosting, colored 7 different colors. We didn't win, but my girls had a

blast and were glad to be part of it all. I did have to keep fending

people off from our " special " frostings, which made me feel

awkward. I had the same problem when dd's class did gingerbread

houses. Kids have a tendancy to come up and put their gluten-covered

hands in our carefully prepared gf stuff, and I have a tendancy to be a little

bit defensive, since I've gone to all the trouble and care to make it

happen. I guess I'm still nervous about the whole thing. Hopefully

as we get used to this lifestyle I'll be able to lighten up a little (or a

lot!).

Thanks to those of you who encouraged and rebuked

me into going the extra effort for my dd. It was worth it.

I've had gluten free kids for 10 years now, and I'm still very defensive about my kids' gluten free food. I feel bad about it sometimes, too, but we've been cross-contaminated before. Luckily, we have a small church with about 4 other moms that have learned what it takes to keep my family gluten free. I see them defending my kids' food from "gluten invasions". My co-leader for my daughter's scout troop is the type that makes a gluten free cake for her daughter's birthday so that my daughter doesn't feel left out. Her kids even ask her if things are gluten free and if my daughter can eat it.

I'm glad you participated in the events. Your girls will remember the good times they had, not that celiac kept them from doing the fun stuff.

Laurie,

I am soooo happy for you. It's a big leap to get over our protectiveness and allow our kids to be "normal" kids in general, celiac or not, but to do something like this is very hard. Parenting is NOT an easy job. At all. Without the special needs, throw those in and wah-hoo... So, my congratulations to you for taking the big leap. Situations like this will continue to come up, and now that the first one is over and was successful, they will become easier and easier to mentally deal with. Not much easier preparation wise, but the things we do for our kids!!

Great job!

AWESOME! I am so happy for you guys! Your daughters must be thrilled that you went the extra mile to let them participate.

Laurie,

You just need to occasionally update your lists. Just make it a habit to

go to the websites of places like McD's and such every few months and print

out a new version of their list. The chicken hasn't been gluten free for

the better part of a year. My kids used to only eat the chicken. They

wouldn't eat hamburgers at home eaither... It took a few months of them

only eating fries and being hungry. They now eat the burgers. They get

them plain. No condiments, no cheese and obviously no bun. Just a plain

patty in a box! They top it off with a little extra salt and pepper. To

me it is disgusting, but we only eat a McD's once or twice a month so I

figure it isn't that big of a deal. As long as they eat something other

than the fries.

nn

~Original Message~

Oh dear, I wish I'd known that before. I was going on someone else's

information. I just checked the McD's website and it is not listed as

gluten free. Well, that leaves us without any options again. She doesn't

like hamburgers. (Sigh). At least we can get her french fries. It just goes

to show that I must be responsible to check for myself. I can't even go by

information from this list, ultimately.

patty in a box! They top it off with a little extra salt and pepper. To

me it is disgusting, but we only eat a McD's once or twice a month so I

figure it isn't that big of a deal. As long as they eat something other

than the fries.

Oh dear, I wish I'd known that before. I was going on someone else's

information. I just checked the McD's website and it is not listed as

gluten free. Well, that leaves us without any options again. She doesn't

like hamburgers. (Sigh). At least we can get her french fries. It just goes

to show that I must be responsible to check for myself. I can't even go by

information from this list, ultimately.

McD's in the Crayola Factory was super easy to work with and had a great

attitude. She deserves a huge raise, IMHO. This was our first time eating

anywhere except P.F. Changs since the diagnosis, and, thanks to you Silly Yaks

who encouraged me, it went just fine. The fries are made in a dedicated fryer,

and they gave us a wonderful grilled chicken breast in a clean box. I was not

able to watch them prepare it, but as someone here said, I guess I just have to

let that go and trust it will be okay. My dd was so happy to have her Happy

Meal (I ate her cheeseburger) with the other kids, and I was near to tears that

we could do this simple thing (that had seemed so hard to me)to give her joy.

(Sorry to be a mushy mom, you know how it is...)

all. I did have to keep fending people off from our " special " frostings, which

made me feel awkward. I had the same problem when dd's class did gingerbread

houses. Kids have a tendancy to come up and put their gluten-covered hands in

our carefully prepared gf stuff, and I have a tendancy to be a little bit

defensive, since I've gone to all the trouble and care to make it happen. I

guess I'm still nervous about the whole thing. Hopefully as we get used to this

lifestyle I'll be able to lighten up a little (or a lot!).
