I don't mean to be the devil's advocate on chiropractors...but...In my

situation, I have Arnold Chiari Malformation, and thank god that I did not

use one! Per the information out on chiari, had I gone to a chiropractor

with just an x-ray, I could have been permanantly paralyzed. You see, my

brain grew down over my spinal cord, something that is not noticable on an

x-ray, but if a chiro would have adjusted me, and set my axis off, it would

have done permanent nerve damage and brain.

So, I know alot of folks swear by chiro's. But...please proceed with

caution, but if at all possible, push your doc to get an MRI instead of just

an x-ray.

I love my chiropracter...and if I could afford it, I'd go every day, maybe

twice a day. It helps me a lot. It just feels good.

I agree, not all chiropractors are equal. The first guy I went to did

help me, he was the one who did the x-rays, but I didn't like his

attitude. I was always " desperate " to get back for more treatment.

When I went to the second guy, he looked at the first guy's x-rays (the

improved set), and set up a treatment plan for me. Completely different

style, added some electric treatments, and I always feel *so* much

better between treatments.

Where in NC are you at Serena? I'm in Charlotte.

With our aches and pains, even without a very specific problem, a neuro is

your best bet! Heck, my problem was at the base of my skull, yet, my arms,

hands, legs and feet would go numb.

I agree w/ Missy...while Chiro's do a lot of good for a lot of people

in many ways, I believe you do yourself a favor by getting a second

opinion from an Ortho, a Neuro, or someone else with an MD. I made

the mistake of starting with a Chiro when I was only 23 years old.

What I thought was just a little backache turned into a severly

ruptured disc that required surgery and 5 months recuperation. I

seriously believe the disc was simply herniated before the chiro

bounced me around on his little table. I don't know if what he did

ruptured it, but I think it did and I've never been the same since.

As a matter of fact, round two of surgery took place last February,

and I'm sure I'll be due for another one before long!

Absolutely! If you have specific pain, you should get it checked out

medically first to make sure it isn't something like that. In my case,

I didn't have any back pain, my dad suggested I try the chiropractor for

my bad wrist. I had already had surgery on the wrist, and due to the

incompetence of a doctor (different one that did the surgery), it hadn't

gotten completely better. I had gone to another doctor who ran a

battery of test, told me that wasn't the normal location for problems,

and unless I developed more symptoms, go away and never come back.

At that point, a chiropractor wasn't going to do my wrist any harm, and

I will say, while it will never go back to 100%, the amount of pain, and

times I've had to splint it, significantly decreased since undergoing

the chiropractic treatment. The treatment ended up helping my back

since I tend to tense up and pull the muscles in my back which pulls

things out of alignment.
