RAI at home

Hi Everyone,

I had my WBS last Thursday and it showed remnant in my neck. I was

relieved that was all that was glowing as I know this is common. So,

tomorrow I'm going to take 100 milicuries of rai. The Dr. feels this

should get rid of the remnant. Anyway, my problem is that I will be

going to my parent's house for at least a week because I have 3 young

children at home (one 5 month old) and if I wanted a hospital room,

the earliest I can have one is in mid-Nov. I don't want to wait....so

my parents are going to take me in. The only problem is that I also

have 4 siblings left at home with them in their 20s. The nuc. med.

dr. just said to be extra cautious. Are there any postings/info. out

there about precautions to take while undergoing treatment at home?

The dr. also mentioned that I shouldn't have garbage.....otherwise, I

have to bring it to the hospital to dispose of it. Does anyone know

what I would do with garbage from say candy wrappers, magazines that

I read, etc...like things that I just touched? I think the dr. meant

more along the lines of things that had my bodily fluids on it, like

a tissue from blowing my nose or food that is half eaten. I really

don't want to worry too much about exposing everyone in my parent's

house but I also want to be cautious. I should be able to come home

after a week (at which time I'll be going for the follow up scan).

Does anyone know if I will still have to take precautions after a

week especially when I'm around my kids? The dr. is not too clear on

when it's 'safe' to be near them. I appreciate any feedback.

Also, I noticed that since I took the scan dose last Tues., my scar

has been " raised " and there's also a " bump " right below the scar

(almost by my chest bone). It also has a slight burning sensation.

Do you think that could be from the rai even though the dose was so

small? If so, I can't imagine what to expect from the 'big' dose....

Thanks to everyone for all of your support and information. I truly

appreciate talking to other people who have been through this. It

has helped me immensely!

Take care and feel well,

Joanne
