Guest guest Posted September 5, 2005 Report Share Posted September 5, 2005 , That is the one thing on the farm I never got the hang of, I was always jealous my younger cousin in Arkansas got up and milked 4 cows before going to school. I always tried and they would eat all the food and ready to go, so I would have to put more food in the trough, finally my Daddy said I was costing to much in grain trying to learn to milk, But I did in my married life learn to milk a goat, I always told my husband I wish my Dad was alive so he could see that I did learn how to milk!!!!!!!!!!! We had just moved to Houston and became "city" people so my dresses were always different from everyone else's. I liked that. Then when I was in college we moved to the country outside of Houston. Well, the city of Pearland took me into the city limits about six years ago and it is very populated here now, but I still have cows and horses on my property because of the grandfather clause. My mom grew everything - - Love ya, * * * * * Same here, - - we had cows - even sold the cream (except for what we needed to make butter) at the grocery store on Saturdays to have enough money to buy staples like flour & sugar & coffee - raised & killed hogs, had chickens for eggs (sold some of them, too) and had chicken for dinner every Sunday! My husband's family raised chickens to kill, clean & sell to a restaurant in town - - my dresses were made from the bags that flour & chicken feed came in! That was a highlight - - getting to pick the pattern on the bags! Yep - - - those were the good old days, huh? We didn't have much of anything - but then noone else had any more than we did - so we didn't know we were poor (we kids didn't - our parents probably did)! And it was definitely a "farm" - - no ranch to it! Ranches only raise cattle - - they don't have to raise chickens & pigs & have gardens to feed their families!! Midland is "BIG RANCH COUNTRY" - - there are a few operational ranches still around, but most of them have given up raising cattle in favor of monitoring their oil wells!! I'm just sorry one of those wells isn't mine! LOL I worked for an oil company from 1965 until I retired in 2002 - but never had any oil to call my own!! I went to a country school and when I went to High School in town I was not only over weight but my clothes weren't great. Caused me a lot of teasing.
