Congratulations--I hope more BCBS's follow suit.

Where did you get your band from, if you don't mind me asking? I

have BCBS NC, but have a DOC band. BCBSNC's stated coverage is $600

but I have been hearing that they are paying just about the whole

thing from " participating providers, " like UNC Hospital. I am

wondering if anyone with a DOC band in NC got more of it paid for

than the $600--it is different though because CT does not contract

with BCBSNC.

Thanks--

Hi Stacey,

Noah's band is actually through UNC hospitals, although BCBS never

said anything to me about participating providers for STARbands

versus DOC bands. If that's the case, then I think I got lucky,

because I ended up going with the STARband because of the referral

that we got, but I agonized over not going to Charlotte. I don't

know what stage you're at with your banding, but I would fight BCBS

for more than $600 if you can. I saw that in the benefits guide,

too, and I figured that's what they'd try to give us, and I was

going to fight it. I don't have any idea if anyone's gotten BCBS of

NC to cover a DOC band--I'm sorry. The only thing that BCBS told me

to do was to make sure that it was stated in Noah's medical records

that the treatment was medically necessary, and I made sure that it

was. If there's anything I can do to help, please let me know!

We actually got our DOC band in February, but we live much closer to

Charlotte, so we didn't really have to decide in that regard. You

are the second parent I have talked to that BCBS NC all but fully

covered the band through the UNC system. That is great news for all

those parents in the Eastern half of our state, at least!

I am so happy for you. Now you don't have to worry about it

anymore. It must have been a pretty good day after that news.

Congrats, Amy! I totally empathize with you. We had Oxford Health

Plans when Nicolas was casted for his DOC band a few weeks ago and

they covered everything. We didn't have to pay a single penny. I'm

just keeping my fingers crossed now that he won't need another band

since we have switched insurance companies now.
