Hi,

i am in australia and i believe this is the cheapest from what i have

read.

my surgery (actual surgeon cost) was only $1300 (which is even less

in $US) and my anasthetic was about $1000.

Hospital was covered by my private health- acctually most was covered

by our government health scheme (medicare) and that which wasnt was

covered by my private health. I think i ended up paying $500 of

anaethetist and that is all.

But australia is a long way to come!

First, I'd say do not give up on getting them to pay, especially if

you have not settled on a surgeon yet. Surgeons sometimes know things

to say and how to put them that lay folks don't.

Second, I'd say check out the dental schools near you. And be

straight with them about the money troubles involved.

And third, if neither of those works for you, be straight with your

doc, and tell him you believe you need it and ask whether he has any

suggestions.

Some folks also have taken out a line of credit on their houses...

Good luck to you.

Hey Holly, what does that 40K mark include? Surgery? Anaesthesia?

Braces? No offense but that sounds ridiculous to me.

I did self-pay because I knew my insurance wouldn't cover anything

orthognathic (and back when I did have insurance that would have

covered it, insurance would only have paid a fraction of the

surgeon's fee, not even anaesthesia and hospital fees). My surgeon

had negotiated flat pre-paid fees with the hospital and the

anaesthesiologist for all his self-pay patients, and all told, for

surgeon, assistant surgeon, hospital, and anaesthesia, it came to a

total of about $17,000 US (I can give you a breakdown of how that

all worked out if you like). I live in the Seattle area, for what

it's worth.

Insurance--even if they only cover a fraction of the cost--often

means having to pay a higher rate. If you ask about special

discounts for self-pay, especially if you prepay, you might be

pleasantly surprised what you might find out.

Best wishes,

Rhonda (upper, lower, genio, & bone graft 5/27)

Call your ins. co. and see if they cover this surgery AT ALL. If

there are previous cases that have been covered, you need to get your

surgeon to come up with some " creative verbage " to get it pushed

through. According to my surgeon, I had medical problems, a speech

impediment, TMJD, etc. etc. My ins. co. however, has a list of

surgeries that it will do and orthognathic is one of them, so I had a

pretty good idea that it would be approved. Also, if your ins. co. is

related to your employer (employer backed ins.) it's in their best

interest to keep you healthy and happy, so maybe talk to a supervisor

or something. Good luck!

Holly,

I live in the bay area. You should try to get individual coverage

from kaiser. Just look in the phone book. All I had to pay was the 50

dollar copay. My doctor was Dr. O'ryan in the Oakland office. Hope

this is good info for you.

Estimated total all-up cost in California for Ramus Osteotomy and

Lefort I.

And no, thanks for the encouragement from the others but my medical

insurance is truly worthless due to the bankruptcy of my former

employer.

As a matter of fact I live in the Bay area and tried Kaiser. They

offered me a policy that excludes coverage for pre-existing

conditions (as does my present insurance with Aetna).

Are you aware of any Australian physicians with experience in Ramus

Osteotomy and/or LeFort? No it's not too far to travel for a good

surgeon at a good price.

I signed up for Kaiser about 3 years ago. I've had a narrow palate

for almost my entire life and it was still covered. You should maybe

call Kaiser's Oral Maxillofacial Surgery department and ask for

advice. The doctor's name is O'ryan. You might not be able to talk

directly to the doctor but the name of the girl who answers the phone

is Soledad. The # is . Don't leave a message. Go through

the options, and I think by pushing 0, you can talk to Soledad. Hope

that helps.

Holly, if you're going to travel for your surgery, Seattle is way

closer than Australia! Email me directly at r_h_marshall at hotmail

dot com (making all the appropriate substitutions) and I will be

happy to give you contact info for my surgeon if you want a

consultation with him.

At six weeks post-op, I am *very* satisfied with his work and the

care I received in hospital (24 hour stay).
