I think you will find that the stares don't bother you nearly as much as you think they will. It's important to just get out there. I took Laurel out the first day she got her band, and I think it was easier (for me, she didn't care!). And for every 1 mean/insensitive comment you will have 10-20 people who really do want to know about the helmet and will say really nice things. That same night as the rude lady, we were eating at Chili's and an 18-19 year old waiter came up and said that it was the coolest thing he'd seen :-) So there is another side...
