hi

i had laproscopic surgery, I could have went back to work in 10 days but i

took another week off, went back for a day, they told me i needed a doctors

note to come back, so i waited another week for my doctors appt (3 week) then

decided to go to cancun for 6 days then went back to work. I had alot of

energy on the protein shakes, but when i started on soft foods i have been

having trouble, so i have had to leave work early because i feel sick. but

the outside is all healed up, i also have a desk job part time.

Can you post-op's let me know about how long you guys were out of

work after surgery...I know everyone's different, but I'm just trying

to get a general idea. Thanks.

I was out for 4 weeks. I could have gone back to my desk job after 3

weeks, but I wanted to take the extra time to get some strength and

energy back, and I'm glad I did. I still had low energy for several

weeks. Even now, after a year, I have some problems with low energy.

Definately everyone is different, but here's what mine was:

At 4 weeks out, I was able to return to my Paramedic job on a " light duty "

status...no lifting of over 25 pounds. After 6 weeks, I was cleared for full

duty, with no restrictions.

I was out of work for 6 weeks ... But that is because my company gave me 6

weeks and I was taking it .. And I think it really did me good because I took

a nap most days ...

But to be perfectly honest I could have gone back to work after 3 weeks and

been just fine ... I work in a tollbooth and it is considered physical labor

....

Hi, I think it depends on what you do for work. I was only supposed to be

out 2 weeks. I am a lunch manager at a public school and can get away with

doing nothing strenuous. (I can tell someone else to do it LOL ) However

once I was out I opted to take longer. I had my surgery 11/29/99. I figured

why push myself. The holidays are hard enough. Playing santa and all the

cooking and such. I stayed the extra time out flowing into x-mas break.

When the first of the year came I was much more comfortable going back to

work and able to go back at full capacity.....

Pam,

Where did you have your surgery? I will be having mine with Dr. Thayer, but I'm

not sure if I'm making the right choice because I would love to have a lap.

I've heard wonderful things about Dr. Thayer, but the thought of a smaller

incision is nice.

Hi

I had my surgery at beth israel deaconess in boston with dr. mun. He hasnt

done alot of laps i think i was like number 18. I know he is very strict on

his choice on who gets it, You have to have a body mass index close to 40, I

think mine was 43 or 44 it was 46 to start but i lost 30 pds on my own. I

was 287 and 5-7. my tummy was fairly flat, he thought i would be a good

candidate for it.

What is your BMI? I know other doctors will do laps on everyone, like

shikora.

let me know if you have any other questions.

There are pros and cons to each surgery. The lap has less scarring, and the

healing time is faster than open. Open is an easier surgery, so they can do

it faster (which means you'll be under general anesthesia for less time),

and with the open procedure, it is easier to find anything else that might

be wrong with you. A lot of your choice depends on your particular case.

was just too damn big to even consider the lap procedure, so it was an

easy choice for him. If you're otherwise healthy, and you aren't concerned

about the length of the surgery, look into getting the lap done. I know

there are some very good doctors in the area who do it. Oh, and one more

pro for the open procedure....Dr. Thayer does it, and he's just a really

neat guy, one of the nicest, most personable surgeons I've ever met. He's

amazing.
