What type of " head gear " are you looking into? My son (almost 7 mos)

just got a DOC band a week ago. Sure, it is hard to see your little

one with this thing on his head, but you do get used to it quite

quickly and your child is still as cute as ever. I know you are

worried about what others will think. I think that is something that

we have all thought about. The way I look at it is, right now my son

doesn't know that people are staring or whispering. If he has to go

through life with what I call a " funky shaped head " . He will go

through years of teasing and may actually have some medical problems

later in life. I guess I believe that if I can do something now, it

is my responsibility to do whatever I can to help him resolve this

problem. It is such a short time in the long scheme of things. My

son doesn't really act like he knows he is wearing it. My daughter 4

3/4 had a harder time adjusting to the idea of him getting it, but

once he did she was fine. We have a lot of fun decorating it. It's

good you are getting all of your info together before you do

anything. Good Luck. Put this web site on your favorites list. You

will use it often. It is a great source of info and support!

I know i our situation the specialist didn't say hardly any thing to

us either. He turned out to be a big huge jerk. Your child should

be fine with the band. I think that most kids act as thought they

don't even know it is there (although I'm sure they do know it is

there). The people who make and fit the band will probably be able

to better answer you questions anyway. What type of band are you

getting? There are STARBands/DOC Bands/ Hanger Bands/ etc. Bands

can also be made independantly by the people who are fitting them.

Your child may be getting a casting which involvs putting plaster

paris on the childs head to take a mold. You can see this prosess

in the files section of this board. Your child maybe getting

scanned which is very simple and quick. They put a sock on the

childs head and put their head in the scanner while you hold them.

It only takes a few seconds. Try not to pre worry too much. You

are doing the right thing for your child. some kids have trouble

sleeping with the band at first but our son didn't. It really

depends on the child. I think as long as you get a good fit the

child won't mind much at all.

Thank you very much!!! THe problem is the doctor said 'yes, he needs

the helmet' but he did not explain at all how many kinds there are

and which one would be reccomanded for my baby. So, I do not know

what differences there are among the 'STARBands/DOC Bands/ Hanger

Bands/ etc.'

Will it be my choice or the maker choice after examining his head?

and which one is the most popular/reccomanded? should I ask for it?

...oh, so many questions..... :-(

If you have been referred to a place that makes them, then your

choice of which type of band has been made for you. You will have to

find out what type they use there. Where are you located and where

was the place you were referred to? Maybe we can help you figure out

what you are getting. You should have been fully informed about this

process and what is to be done before they told you you were getting

a band, shame on that doctor.Don't be afraid to ask all the questions

you have, this is your baby.

Hi Lobi,

Welcome to the group! Do you know the name of the place you'll be

going to? It is TOTALLY your decision which product you use, you don't

HAVE to use the place your doc referred you to. Is is SUPER important

that the orthotist who treats your child's plagio has experience doing

so! You're going to have to do your homework, not all orthos have

experience, treating plagio babies. Where are you located?

Hello and thank you!

I am located in West Los Angeles, California and the specialist

referred me to the Beverly Hills Prosthetics Orthotics, Inc. located

in Beverly Hills, CA (the closest to where I live).

I am trying to do my homework and go to the first appointment

prepared and ready to ask questions but I still know so little that

I feel very intimidated.

What should I ask? what should I look for? How do I know if the

orthotist is experienced? How do I know what helmet to choose?

So many questions...

thanks again for all the help!

Hi,

You're welcome. The place you're going to is listed in our helmet/band

database. We don't have a member contact listed though.

You should ask how many babies they successfully treated with their

band. Do they have before and after pictures of babies they've treated

and do they have any refercences. Is the product they use passive or

active. Your baby is 6 months old so your best bet if it's possible

would be to get him into an active band. Passive helmets rely totally

on growth. Head growth slows down considerably once a baby hits 6

months. Good luck and please keep us posted.

Lobi,

I'm in Los Angeles too. My daughter is going to Cranial Therapies

in Toluca Lake. It's a hike for us but worth it. So far, they have

been very good.

Lobi -

I'm in LA too - my son graduated from a DocBand (CT in Toluca Lake

also) in September - we were very happy with the results. I went to

a doctor in BH - Dr. Grahm who didn't really push one company over

another - but we decided to take the longer drive to CT also just

because of the many good things we heard about them on this group.

But I know my doctor also recommended BH Orthopedics and Learman and

Sons - I have heard a few other parents say they were happy with

Learman and Sons as well, can't specifically remember anything about

BH Orthopedics (in BH) - I found some of those moms I think on

another group called Peachhead - if you're interested in

posting on that group and can't find it, e-mail me at

pateltoral@... - I don't always keep up on my e-mails, so it's

probably best to e-mail me directly. You may want to make an

appointment at CT and keep your current appointment and then just

see who you're more comfortable with.

Our baby was banded around six months and we still saw excellent

results - he was within normal range after the helmet - and he

didn't seem to mind it too much - he got used to it after a week or

so. And right now the weather is still a little cooler so hopefully

you won't have to worry about him getting too hot. Good luck, e-

mail me if I can answer any more questions.
