Guest guest
I always try to keep in the back of mind that this is the internet and just because someone SAYS they are this-and-such doesn't necessarily mean they really are. I could say I was ANYBODY I wanted to just to slam an institution or a person. As a past member of AlAnon, I remember something I was told in those meetings. Actually it was in reference to meetings and such, but they always said " Take what you like and leave the rest. " I have applied that to sooo many things in my life. I would have applied it to what that 'wise old sage of an MT' said. That's the wonderful thing about the internet. You can be who you want to be and try to make everyone think that's just who you are while all the time you are sitting in front of a screen, not having had a shower for 3 days, with dirty underwear on, picking your nose and not actually have a job at all. Just because you read it....don't mean it's true! Take what you like and leave the rest...... Suzanne
Guest guest
Opinions are like ... belly buttons ... everyone has one. All I will say here is that I didn't go to s or M-TEC; I graduated from Career Step. I'm doing very well, thank you. I have been offered a job by every company that I have tested with, and I refuse to feel like I came from " the wrong side of the tracks. " Keep in mind that just because someone is experienced or just because they are a service owner, that this doesn't mean they are infallible or that their word is gospel. Certainly, I *do* listen carefully to those more experienced than I, but I don't simply accept what I hear without tossing it around in the old brain and bouncing it off other input. I can't tell you the number of times that companies have told me that they have they most trouble (quality issues) with MTs with many years of experience. I am not knocking the " olbies " here. Some are absolutely great, fabulous, and have so much to offer the newbies. I'm just saying that some with experience are really, really good and some aren't. Some have been doing things wrong for years. What I am trying poorly to say is that we should listen to others, yes, but that we need to ultimately make our own decisions and form our own opinions based on all of our input from many sources. One other thing. Discussing MT schools is often like discussing religion or politics. You have to wear your heavy armor if you want to participate in the fray. That's way I usually stay out of it. My armor is pretty rusty. *G* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rennie My Home Page: http://www.renesue.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Bashing all the schools-OT Everyone, I would like your feedback. I posted some web sites of some good schools on an aol board and boy am I sorry I did that. I was trying to be helpful but unless you have been on that board for a long time, you better not give any opinions or advice. I do not take offense though. I am just going to let those people to themselves and go my merry way. Here is an email I got from one of the oldtimers on the board. And to let you know, I gave the web sites of AAMT, MT Daily and some schools. ROS, Career Step, s, Meditech, and CAI. I just gave the web sites as a starting point for people to start doing their own research into schools. I didn't recommend any one of them. Let me know.....Does everyone agree with her statements? I feel like everything I have learned in the past few months is a lie. She says there are only 2 good programs. I just enrolled in a school that I thought was very good and have heard nothing but great things about CAI. Even Medquist says CAI has their people trained well. This lady says she has been an MT for 33 yrs. Thanks for your opinion. Tina Here is her email. The reason that I posted what I posted is. I have been an MTSO for 33 years. I test MTs every day. I feel that I, and other long time MTs who deal with students from these programs have a better understanding of what it takes to produce a good MT and what programs are doing a better job than others. You have made statements on here that are contrary to mine and other MTSOs experience. Newbies (like yourself) may read your post and go to one of these programs, which is truly a waste of their money. Do you truly feel that you are in a position to make a recommendation to someone else when you have never worked one day as an MT and have yet to find out if your own training is worth the money you paid for it. I am also an MTSO that must turn people down and tell them that they don't have the quality of an education to work for me. I also have to help answer questions from those who didn't get it in school and help others get retrained in order to be gainfully employed. I am not trying to be nasty. I am just pointing out to you that you could be doing some damage by promoting programs that you know nothing about, well that is nothing more than what other people with no knowledge posting on other MT sites. Others are likely to jump you on the board because some of the programs that you recommended are pure crap and I mean that in the nicest way. First Meditech, not M-Tec, is by far the worse program in the world. They believe that you can teach someone to transcribe in 3 months. It just isn't possible. Their name is very close to M-Tec and they are trading on that. I know about the programs because I have been on mine for 9 years and have a large service. I have people from every program apply with me and most cannot pass my tests. I also mentor people from three of the programs that you listed because they are not hirable by any of the national companies and I took pity on them. The only two really really good programs are M-Tec and s. I will no longer even consider taking students from the other courses because they do not have the intensive training that it needs to be a good MT. Since I can get students from these programs, why would I put time into someone who it takes me more time to untrain them and then train them right. If you truly believe that the programs that you listed are good, then you are not going to any of the recognized good MT sites. Because if you did, you would find out that they are inadequate programs. Stick around because I do think that you have possibilities because you are not afraid of challenges and at least ask questions without taking offense, which are very good characteristics in a good MT. Guest guest
Same here, Val! My mother started training me when I was 16. I went to a private university through their pre-med program and even took the MCAT, but then decided that I'd rather be a mom and an MT after all. Granted, those pre-med courses helped a little, but I've learned most everything from just on-the-job experience. My mom was trained in a hospital and has been doing it for almost 30 years. I have never been to one school - and I, too, am a VERY successful MT (IC). I have recently been picking up a lot of new accounts from clinics that were using local services and were unhappy with them. I LOVE my job and am very pleased with the way I became an MT ... no school at all! SO, wonder what she would think of ME? Re: Bashing all the schools-OT Yea, I've about such boards...wonder what she would think of me who has been a VERY successful MT and MTSO without going to one single school?......lol Val Bashing all the schools-OT Everyone, I would like your feedback. Their name is very close to M-Tec and they are trading on t hat. Guest guest
When someone who claims to have so many years of experience, and such high standards as well, sends a long post containing so many grammar and punctuation errors...well, it kind of casts just a shade of doubt, doesn't it? I know she was just rambling there and not composing a formal report, but come on. From the very first sentence. Reminds me of those long-winded letters we all get from the supposed nephew of the Chief of Watutsiland, requesting our bank info so they can send us millions of dollars to save them from losing it to the evil opposing forces. Guest guest
Hi Lynn, I am in total agreement with you. I do, although, have to make a couple statements regarding this. Rennie is one of the most knowledgeable persons I know, and she went to school with Career Step. I, on the other hand, went to M-Tec and it took me a couple of years before I could find someone who was willing to work with me. I think it is the person in the long run that makes the difference. Every bit of criticism I get from my boss, I take it to heart and correct it, so I don't have to make that mistake again. It does amaze me, however, that these so-called MTSOs have the time to criticize the newer people. Don't they work? I know with the work that I do, sometimes I just don't have the time to even answer or read all the messages that come through. From the email that you showed, in my opinion, this person sounds like the Great I Am. This is what is great about this list, you can comment on anything and have your opinions and people don't downgrade you. At least if you do, you don't last very long. As Rennie says, opinions abound, everyone has one. Well I have to get to work for the day. Later.
Later. RE: Bashing all the schools-OT When someone who claims to have so many years of experience, and such high standards as well, sends a long post containing so many grammar and punctuation errors...well, it kind of casts just a shade of doubt, doesn't it? I know she was just rambling there and not composing a formal report, but come on. From the very first sentence. Reminds me of those long-winded letters we all get from the supposed nephew of the Chief of Watutsiland, requesting our bank info so they can send us millions of dollars to save them from losing it to the evil opposing forces. Lynn Here is her email.
