Guest guest
Hi , You must live in/near Seattle! They are the only place that I know of currently using the Clarren helmet. It's actually quite out of date, but was invented by a doctor from that hospital. The company that makes the Clarren is Orthomerica, www.orthomerica.com and most people order the active STARband from them. The Clarren is passive, which means it works best on babies under 6mos who are still seeing that pattern of active growth. If Washington is your location, I would strongly suggest your looking into the Hanger locations in your state. They are in our helmet/band database. There is a picture of the Clarren on the Orthomerica site where you can see how outdated it looks--it is a full helmet w/a chin strap. Good luck. , mom to Hannah, DOCgrad Cape Cod, Ma http://hannahsnoggin.typepad.com http://www.orthomerica.com/products/cranial/cranialindex.htm > > Hi. Guest guest
Ok, now I'm stressing more. The Clarren Helmet was the only option we were given. Mayson is almost 8 months. Like I said before I've heard great things about the bands but nothing about the helmets. The Dr. seemed to think it was going to work just fine on his head. He said it might not be able to do much for his forehead (which isn't that noticeable) but he said it should help with the back of his head. It all happened so fast once we saw the Cranial/Facial person at Children's (because of his age) I don't even know where to start to find other options. Mayson does Physical Therepy every week and it is helping with his neck, he turns his head to the side he wouldn't and we catch him sleeping on the other side now. I feel so bad. I've been on his Dr's about his neck and head forever and they just decided we could have it checked out, and now I'm hearing he's out of the prime age for the maximum benifit of anything. AHHHHHHHHHhh! I'm just feeling kind of helpless at the moment. Thanks for the info though. It is nice to know my little guy isn't the only one going through this. I love all the pictures on here! Guest guest
, I can't say that I blame you for stressing, I'd be stressing out too! You DO have other options in Washington: Washington Hanger Cranial Band Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics West, Inc. 9115 Bridgeport Way #2, Lakewood, WA 98499 (253)-589-9838 www.hanger.com Washington Hanger Cranial Band Hanger Prosthetics & Orthotics West, Inc. 33710 9th Ave S #1, Federal Way, WA 98003 ' (253)-927-3554 www.hanger.com They both offer active bands, which would be great for your son. I'd hate to see you waste valuable correction time in a passive helmet. I didn't even think doctor's were still prescribing them! I don't know how much experience level or either one of these ortho. Hopefully they have some! Let us know what you find out. Take care, > > > > > > > > Hi. My son 7.5 months is getting his helmet this week. Guest guest
Hi, I wrote last week about getting a helmet, and now I too am freaking out from reading this. My 7.5 month old was prescribed the Danmar Helmet from University of Michigan. This too was the only option I was given. I called my ped back today, and she told me this was fine. But after reading all of this, I'm so worried that I'm wasting time with the passive helmet. Please help??? Jen > > > > > > > > > > Hi. My son 7.5 months is getting his helmet this week. Guest guest
Jen, I'm sorry you're freaking out. That wasn't my intention at all. :-( Passive helmets rely TOTALLY on growth. Once a baby hits 6 months old head growth slows down dramatically. Passive helmets DO work they just work best on really young infants whose heads are growing very rapidly. An active band redirects the growth of the head through gentle pressure not felt by the baby. They don't rely totally on growth alone. It would only make sense to put an " older " (older than 6 months) baby in an active band so that the best possible correction is possible. You do have other options in MI. Starband 720 Michigan Ave. Ste B, Holland 49423 616 396-4620 www.orthomerica.com www.hanger.com Our group contact(s) nowjustjules@... allison@... Good luck and please keep us posted. Take care, > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi. Guest guest
Don't worry about freaking me out, I already was! I am kicking myself for not finding this site sooner. We were casted for the helmet last week, and aren't scheduled to get it until next week. We have insurance issues (denied due to contract exclusion), so we are in the appeals process. We also have a sight chance at getting new insurance as of 2/1, so they are researching for me to see if the new plan would cover it. Anyways, she's getting treatment no matter what, but I just want it to be the right one, especially if we are paying out of pocket. I think I will contact Orthoamerica today and talk to them. Do you have any suggestions for who I can talk to that is an MD? I feel like my peds just sent us to U of M, where she automatically refers. When I followed up with her yesterday, she didn't know the difference between a helmet and a band. I feel like I need a cranio facial specialist to help me, but when I called them a few months ago, they told me it was up to my peds to diagnose and refer to a helmet/band place. Thanks for listening! Jen > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi. My son 7.5 months is getting his helmet this week. > > Is > > > > there > > > > > > > anyone else that has/had the Clarren Helmet? Guest guest
Hi Jen, I know of 2 docs in MI that are plagio educated here is the info if you're interested: Preferred Physician: Dr Arleen Rozzelle specialty: Craniofacial Surgery address: Children's Hospital Plastic Surgery 3901 Beaubien City: Detroit State: MI Province, Territory or Non-US State: Zip/postal code: Country: USA Telephone number: 313-745-0247 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Preferred Physician: Dr. Ian T specialty: Craniofacial Surgery address: 16001 W. Nine Mile Rd. 3rd floor Fisher Center City: Southfield State: MI Province, Territory or Non-US State: Zip/postal code: 48075 Country: USA Telephone number: 800-423-5801 I also know that Dr. J. Mann, is VERY educted in plagio. I don't have his contact info though. I know he's in Grand Rapids. Hopefully one of these places are close to you and in network. Just to let you know a script from your pediatrician is good enough to get a band, any band. All she has to write is cranial orthosis. That covers them all. Guest guest
Thanks for the referrals, I appreciate it. I called two of the docs, and was able to talk to a nurse with the Dr in Grand Rapids. She told me that he will prescribe a helmet for a child 's age depending on the serverity of the plagio, so that I shouldn't be discouraged that I am getting a helmet. But, what really concerned me is that she asked if we had a CT or X-rays done, of which we've had neither. Should I be concerned? Thanks again for all of the help, I would be lost without you! Guest guest
Jen, Not all plagio babies have CT scans or X-rays done. You should call this doc's office and find out if it's mandatory before he'll write a scirpt. If that's the case you need to get them done ASAP. :-) Did you make an appointment with one of them? You should be VERY proud of yourself, your SO on top of this situation. Keep us posted. > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi. Guest guest
The doctor in Grand Rapids said he required them. My ped never told us to get them, and U of M didn't require them before fitting for her helmet. The big issue now is that U of M has started making her helmet, and I think we are stuck paying for it. I wish I had found you guys sooner! On another note, I just hung up with Humana, and am so frustrated with their " policy exclusion " denial. I looked at my policy, and found that cranial banding is listed in the same paragraph with " lactation therapy " and " light therapy " . How can they even compare the two??? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi. Guest guest
I'd call them and tell them to stop what they've done, as you're not going to pay for it! They can compare the 2 because most insurance companines stink! :-( So what are you going to do? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi. Guest guest
My friend's son wore a Clarren helmet. I think it was from Seattle Children's Hospital if I remember correctly. I think he got it at 8 or 9 months. She said it did absolutely nothing to correct his plagio. > > Hi. My son 7.5 months is getting his helmet this week.
