I don't use a prescribed medication. I use Immodium that you can buy over

the counter. It works great for me.

Take care,

Irene

,

I take Imodium for the diarrhea, and my doctor prescribes

Levsin (hyoscyamine) for the cramping. He also recommends

a fiber supplement like Metamucil or Fibercon.

Hope that helps!

Patidu -

I found a site that recommended working up to 3 table spoons of Metamucil a day.

I get the generic at Wal-Mart. It can be taken all at one time - just be sure

you take a sufficient amount of water. I think 1 tbls in a glass of water 3 X's

a day works out good for me.

I can so sympathize, . Lonox is an antispasmodic, I think, mostly

for diarrhea, but it doesn't sound like it's the med for you. If I were

you I'd call my doc and ask for something different. I will try to

remember teh name of the antispasmodic I took at work one day -- I was

having a lot of IBS trouble, and one of the nurses gave me a liquid form of

some antispasmodic that's evidently been around for dog's years. It worked

like a *charm*. I'm going to ask my GP for an RX for it.

Hi ,

I've had irritable bowel syndrome for several years now, and yes, it's been

so bad that I've been unable to leave the house several times for weeks at

a time (and I've had several disasters when I DID leave!). My gastro doc

did a colonoscopy to rule out any other " bad " things, and when he was left

with IBS, he prescribed me Cholestyramine for Oral Suspension, USP, Light.

It's a medication that's sometimes prescribed for lowering cholesterol, and

on the package it says " This packet contains 4 grams of anhydrous

cholestyramine in 5 grams of Cholestyramine for Oral Suspension, USP,

Light. WARNING - Phenylketonurics: contains phenylalanine 10.8 mgs per 5

gram dose. I don't need it for the cholesterol lowering purpose, but it

works GREAT at controlling my IBS. It literally has given me back my

freedom to go out again (when the fibro's not flaring too bad<g>). It's an

orange flavored powder that you mix with water and drink - it's sort of

thick and pulpy, but not terrible. I don't even have to take mine every

day - I usually try to take it every 3 days or so, or if I have an

" episode " , I always carry a dose around in my purse to take right then. It

also helps to get rid of that nauseous feeling. Do you also have the

constipation element? I don't have that part of it (much) - I just have

diahhrea/cramping/nausea so don't take medication for the constipation, but

when they were experimenting around they put me on Bentyl - it's an

antispasmodic. I couldn't tell any difference so quit taking it, but I

know it's helped other people a great deal. You also need to try and

pinpoint some of the " trigger foods " in your diet and eliminate those from

your diet as much as possible. Some of my triggers are coffee, ice cream,

chocolate, anything that's high in caffeine. Hope this helps and you can

get it under control - it's one of the most horrible " non-serious "

syndromes out there, because it controls every aspect of your life when

it's not under control. Hang in there, find a good gastroenterologist if

your GP isn't helping, and get some appropriate treatment. It's not

hopeless! It just looks that way right now :-( ((((hugs))))

My doctor used to give me Bentyl. It didn't

work. Then, I got Levsin, took it for about six

months, and my IBS went away.
