Guest guest Posted April 7, 2005 Report Share Posted April 7, 2005 hi jennifer, we flew through angel flight to erie twice. my husband and lucas in oct and lucas and i in feb. the pilot(s) volunteer their time and their plane to do this. i believe that they have high qualifications, but i don't know the details. they do have to fly entirely by instruments so they do have to have high tech equipment installed. it is usually a small plane. lucas and i flew to erie in a 4 seater. i believe it was a similar plane to what my husband flew in oct. they had no weather issues in oct so it was very easy flights. unfortunately, due to the weather in feb, there was fog in erie so we could not land and were directed to pittsburgh and ended up taking a van driven by a local shrine up to erie (2 1/2 hrs). also, snow was predicted on the day we were going back so angel flight cancelled on us. instead of waiting to find out if we could leave another day, we took a commercial flight back paid for by a local shrine in ma. my suggestion is that if you have any motion sickness, you might want to consider taking dramamine or something like that. they are small planes, and you will feel the bumps a bit more. otherwise, the one flight out there was nice (but unfortunately not short because of the weather). you should have none of those problems in april! good luck! deshea Angel Flights is flying us to Erie on Sunday. Anyone know what kind of qualifications their pilots have? Also, do they fly their own personal planes or do they belong to Angel Flights? Can you tell I am nervous? LOL. I am normally a fearful flyer, so this has got me somewhat worried. But, it beats a 7 1/2 hour drive with a cranky infant. I was thinking of giving Ian some benedryl so that he sleeps on the plane, but I wasn't sure if he is allowed any medication 2 days prior to casting. Are there any rules on that? On the practical side, Siobhan got motion sick on one of the flights (the plane was very small and loud), so I gave her " gravol " (not sure if it has the same name in the U.S.), but it worked. She slept for most of the flight, and didn't feel sick at all. As for qualifications etc., I had no worryies or concern's, but if you are, call and ask them, they can put your mind at rest.... Have you gone to the weblink that is on the links page? You can call the division for your area and they will tell you what is required - basically, they just asked me if it would be too much for us financially to fly commercially back and forth (ie. would we have to charge it) and we didn't even have to provide paperwork. The pilots were all wonderful and it was such a great help. However you can go through mercy medical airlift 2 times a year. miracle flights for kids will fly you but you fly and claim..they pay 500 a flight. I will get you the web sites. Angel Flights will NOT work for long distance nor for another country... Mercy will work with almost everyone. And to all members... check the files and links... enormous value to most.
