To answer your question about genio:

" 1) They are going to be making my chin bigger (genio), so what in

the heck do they stick in there to make it bigger? "

Your surgeon will use your own chin bone to do this. He or she will

cut the end of your chin bone off and then advance it to where it

needs to be. And then it will be kept in its new place with plates

and screws.

Hey there! I too had my upper jaw moved up, lower forward and chin

forward as well (June 11). For the chin part, what happens in most

cases is that the surgeon slices the bone and then pushes the lower

part forward. It's only been 3 weeks since the surgery for me, so I

still have some swelling, but I actually have a chin now and it is

so darn cute!!! The first few days were so incredibly hard - way

harder than I thought it would be - it was awful - BUT- as soon as

that first week is over, things get way better. The congestion was

really bad the first couple of days (due to upper jaw surgery) and I

felt like I couldn't breathe. Also, sleeping for me was really hard

the first week (sleeping w/ my head elevated) but it has gotten so

much better - I don't wake up at all during the night now. My mouth

is wired shut so needless to say I am kinda low on energy and so so

hungry - I have a list of all the foods I'm going to eat when I

finally can! I am still numb and tingly below my eyes, on my

cheeks, my lower lip and my chin, but from my understanding it takes

weeks and even months to get the feeling back.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Sounds like you're having what I had done - except the chin. My upper

was widened and the back moved up, and the lower moved forward. I am

almost 6 weeks post-op and I'm still numb in the lower lip/chin, and I

still have some swelling. My orthodontist is just jumping up and down

happy with the results, though I'm still reserving judgement till it's

all over and I get to looking " normal " and get the feeling back in my

lip/chin. I was really scared a couple of nights before the surgery,

not of what I was going to look like or the after effects, but of not

waking up! I've got 2 young 'uns and a sweet husband and it really

scared me to think about it. Sorry, that probably didn't help any.

My case wasn't as severe as yours, it sounds like. My ortho was

willing to straighten my teeth without surgery, but I figured if I was

going to put that much time and money into braces, I ought to do it

" right " . He said if I didn't have surgery, I'd most likely end up

with a " flat face " and still have an open bite. I know it's scary and

you'll wonder what the heck you were thinking the first few days, but

it really does get better and better. As far as getting hit in the

jaw by your dog... I've got a puppy and 2 kids; you just have to be

real careful not to put your head over something that might suddenly

jump up. My husband was playing with the puppy and threw her toy over

my head. She turned and ran right into my face. We were both pretty

surprised, but no damage done...just be as careful as you can.

Hello there,

I am almost 1 year post op, July 30th is my anniversary to be exact.

I had basically the same surgery that you will have... I had Lefort I-

maxillary impaction, lower forwarded, and genio.

I was totally calm until I was in the holding room at the OR with all

these strange people (residents) staring at me. This was quickly

alleviated however when they gave me a shot of whatever. The nurse

todl me that I would feel like I had a couple of glasses of wine-more

like a couple of truck loads of wine. I don't remember anything after

that-only waking up in ICU, intubated and unable to open my eyes due

to swelling.

They use your own chin bone to make your new chin, then secure it

with screws. I can feel the long tail of a screw under my bottom

front teeth extending from my chin.

I was pretty nervous about altering my new face in some accident.

But, it didn't happen. Even though its been almost a year, I still am

nervous. My dog for whatever reason, like to bite me on the chin. I

feel like it is so fragile, but, its not going anywhere. When I saw

the surgeon last back in late May, he said my bite had not shifted

one bit from when he set it. I just followed every single instruction

he gave to the letter and avoided any situation where I could get hit

in the face, fall on my face, or whatever. I was just cautious. I

think that I will always be cautious now, there will always be this

lingering fear that the old face could somehow come back.

I'm only 5 days post-op ... so I don't speak from experience but

rather from my heart. Deep breaths, a little faith, support of

family and friends ... and you'll be fine. All the best!!!

Hi, !

Sooo good to hear from you again. I've been wondering how you're

doing, but know you're busy with job, studies and other things, and

didn't wanna hassle you.

Hope this all means that you're doing well.

Hey, put some peanut butter or chopped liver on your fingers to

persuade your pup that they're more interesting than your chin. I

don't thing that dogbites fall into the category of recommended

massage techniques! ;~)

Best,

C.
