Hi ,

I think you should keep him in PT, it's not going to hurt him. It

could only help. My plaigo/tort/low tone baby is now 4.5 years old.

She had EI for over a year when she was a baby. She was very delayed

due to the tort had the low tone. She also had some sensory issues

going on too at the time. Since September she's been in a special ed

pre-school. She has very poor speech and she STILL has low tone, she

receives PT in school 3 times a week.

I just had a meeting w/my school district, they'd like to keep

in Special Ed when she goes to Kindergarten. I was/still am so upset

by this. I thought she'd catch up this year but it's already obvious

to them that isn't going to happen.

Do all you can for him now while he's still so young. It's so hard on

them when they're older and they can't keep up with their peers.

Good luck and please keep us posted.

Hi ,

As a PT I may be biased, but here's my opinion. If your child is

delayed in any motor skills, PT can only help. Particularly if you

qualify for EI and it's being provided at no or low charge. That is

an ideal situation where the child can only benefit. I know it is

difficult to be told there is something " wrong " or " delayed " with

your child, but even if it was said in a not so tactful manner, I do

think her intentions were good. When babies are delayed, therapy can

help them to catch up with their peers so later on they won't have

problems. Low tone is not an uncommon problem, and it does need to

be worked on. It doesn't go away, but the child needs to learn to use

muscles appropriately so they don't start to compensate. Many of us

go into adulthood with low tone (on the normal end) and it leads to

poor posture, poor use of muscles of the trunk and eventual neck and

back pain. Early intervention is very appropriately named, the

earlier you start to help a problem, the better off you are.

If, however, you really have a problem (personality wise or

something) with your particular therapist, you can ask the EI agency

if you can switch therapists. But, this may not be possible due to

lack of enough therapists in your area. It depends.

Good luck to you.

I don't know if this helps but my daughter has been evaluated with

hypotonia (low tone). She is almost 9mo and was diagnosed at 6mo.

They have not done any testing to figure out why she has it. Anyway

I am told her low tone is " mild " the symptoms that led to this are

the following: when I pick her up under her arms she feels very

loose compared to my other kids, so much so it feels like she could

pass right through my hands. Also she doesn't hold on to me with

her legs and feet when I hold her on my hip. She was delayed

slightly with sitting and still slumps over. She does not like to

push up and put weight on her legs yet either. Otherwise she is

perfectly normal. I agree with getting a second opinion if it makes

you feel better, we have had a pediatrician, a neurologist and a PT

all say she has low tone, but each classifies how much slightly

differently. I feel for you, my little Olivia had all that along

with her doc band referral all at the same time. I was feeling

pretty overwhelmed and scared for my little one. I will tell you

that the PT is definitely helping her to catch up a bit with her

milestones and that is comforting as the whole low tone thing is

still a big question mark as far as what I can expect long term.

Hang in there! Also there is a group for Hypotonia that has

been really helpful to me just like this group has been with support

and info. Just be careful of researching the net on your own about

this, it had me freaking out about worse case scenarios, the best way

to handle it is to just take the steps that God has shown you and not

get too ahead thinking the worst.

We are dealing with a little bit of tone issues with Cece. I think

she's doing okay with that now. It's hard to hear that your kid is a

little " floppy! "

I don't think an EI PT would be telling you anything to make more

money. There are plenty of kids in need of EI so I'm sure she would

have a steady stream of patients and she probably works on a salary

anyhow.

I would keep on going with the PT. My friend's daughter didn't get dx

with low tone until she was 3. She's got a long road of PT in front

of her because of the delay in treatment!

Thanks for your opinion. It does help to hear another PT relay most

of the same things 's PT has stated. There are some

personality conflicts with this PT. She is very young, very blunt,

and tends to scare me into following her advice. She was the only

one available in my area, so I need to deal with my feelings and

TRUST that she knows what she is talking about.

Thanks again,

Thanks for telling me a little about your situation. seems very sturdy to me, not so much floppy like some have reported with their little ones. The PT says that tends to sit more on one cheek of his bottom rather than both. Therefore, sitting a little slumped. Also, he hasn't tried to crawl yet. Now, this may be because my hubby, myself, and my daughter never crawled as well...not sure though. He lifts his bottom up when on his tummy, but doesn't seem to know what to do after that.I just feel awful. He is in his second DOC band with hopes of graduating mid February, finally gets that darn tort and tear duct problem resolved, and now this. He just seems to have to go over one hurdle after another. From what I have read, this condition remains with the child through adulthood. I don't know how much longer we will have to see the therapist if this is true. 5/20/05 - DOC band #1: 9/05-12/05 , DOC band #2: 12/05-presentChicago suburb> >> > My son is in his second band and has been seeing a PT from EI for > > his torticollis. Thanks for your reply . Do you think things would have been

different if had not seen a PT? Did she get " caught up " in

any of her delayed developmental areas with PT?

Hi ,

You're welcome. The weird thing is she was totally caught up when she

was released from EI and PT. I think things would be different if they

would have kept on working with her. She was discharged while she

still had low tone. I was told and believed that it would eventually

go away. That hasn't been the case for , so once again she is

behind her peers.

Take care,

If this is the PT that has ben working with Nate, then I would tend

to believe what she says. The PT's through EI are so busy, so it

would not be a case of her just wanting the work. If he does indeed

have low tone, than it is extremely important to keep him in PT. What

she told you is correct. PT is necessary to keep Nate on track and

developing at a more normal rate. Without PT, Nate ould miss

milestones or be way behind and if this continues they tend to give

up on alot of things because it is too hard for them. I don't think

it will hurt to have the other PT look at Nate, but if this one has

been with him through his tort than that's who knows him best. Things

tend to go in stages with EI, because they have to write up new IFSP

for each therapy needed, that's why she'll do another evaluation. I

know it looked like you were at the end of the road, but our babies

like to throw us a curve ball every now and then to keep us on our

toes, lol. I hope that makes you feel a little better.
