It sounds like you are talking about your areolas?? I hear it can be harder

for babies to latch on to large nipples, but I have seen (even preemies) it

done! I suggest using the RAM (rapid arm motion...I think) method to get the

baby on with a wide mouth. Practice with baby saying " Open...ahh " and show

baby how to open wide. You should be able to get the baby to take enough

breast tissue into his/her mouth to make it work. Rule of thumb is they

should be taking about the length from finger tip down to 2nd knuckle...back

to their soft pallate. You can do it!

Mine are definitely bigger than quarters lol I haven't had a problem at all, of course we can't get ALL of the areola into the baby's mouth lol

Michele

How's THAT for a subject line?!?!? :) I read that the baby can havetrouble latching if your nipples are bigger than quarters. Well, mine arelike small plates!! Really-the most of the nipple and the little bumpiesaround it are fairly close, but the brown extends out forever! More thanyou wanted to know!! :) So anyway is there anything I should know to makethis experience more successful (providing my child EVER comes out!!)Love,

I think that when " they " say nipples bigger than nickles/quarters/whatever

they mean just the nipple, not the entire areola (brown area) which is often

vary large on pregnant/lactating women.

LOL I know what you mean mine are huge also, my whole breast is huge

LOL when my baby was born one breast was bigger than her whole head LOL. They

get it in there mouths, it will take practice and you have to make sure that

baby opens WIDE, there is no way you can get all of the areola in there

mouths (I know some books and even nurses have said to get it all in there)

but that is impossible, as long as you get there mouths 1 inch past the

nipple baby should be fine. : )

It can be a problem in the very beginning when you might be engorged. I had

to hand express a little first to get my breasts soft enough to latch on

(also have large nipples and areola). The baby doesn't have to take the

whole areola in, just latch on well past the nipple portion.

I'm confused now. Maybe that explains why I was so sore for so long. That's

like an inch, inch and a half? I knew it was supposed to be more than just

the nipple itself, but I never got *that* much in her mouth when she was a

newborn (or now). Is that what I am supposed to be doing next time?

Like Wendi said, I have heard it's about one inch you should be getting into

the babes mouth. It is hard at first since the mouth of a baby is so small,

that's probably why so many of us are sore at first. They quickly accomodate

enough breast tissue if you work at it a bit usually.

Lynn,

Generally they say to latch about an inch back from the nipple. It is

important to get as much as possible in the babies mouth to prevent

soreness.

Thanks so much! You've all made me feel so much better about my giant

nipples!! :) Now, if the baby would just hurry up and get here-I'm so

anxious to breastfeed!!

I think you might be surprised to find out how much nipple is actually going

into babies mouth. Have you ever seen a drawing of what the nipple looks

like inside the baby's mouth. It is stretched far back almost to the throat,

by passing all teeth. You may be able to see the shape your nipple takes if

you look at it quickly after baby latches off, or you can see it during a

pumping session.
