Re: Sleeping through the night with DOCBand

My son, , 6.5 months just got his DOC band last Thursday. He

was always a good sleeper too. Well not anymore. He would get up

once or twice for a bottle in our pre DOC days. Now he is up every

couple of hours. Not necessarily for a bottle, but just can't get

himself back to sleep. He used to rub his face a lot when falling

asleep, but now with the band he can't as easily. I would love to

hear from anyone with any helpful ideas too.

Charlie doesn't have his band yet, but as far as

sleeping goes, I let him sleep with a paci at night.

Night is the only time he gets his pacifier. I think

it's the sucking that the babies need for soothing.

Have you tried giving Ethan or pacifiers when

they wake up?

If Charlie cries out at night, sometimes I leave him

alone, but if he's persistent I will go to him. I

never speak, don't turn on the bright lights (he has a

night light). I just give him the paci, soothe him,

pat him a bit and then leave.

I hope those same strategies work once he has his

band.

might continue to wake up until 9 months old. After that, then you

I read that book too. We have Ben (who is now 11 months old) go to

bed between 6:30 and 7PM. He was still not sleeping through the

night. Over the long holiday weekend, we finally decided we needed

to eliminate his 10:30PM bottle by letting him just cry it out. It

was a little easier than expected, and he now will sleep until 3:30 -

4:30 AM before we give him another bottle. Since he goes to

daycare at 7:30, we usually try to get him to stay asleep until at

least 6:45.

Hi Edina,

I went thru the same thing with my son. Try reducing his bottle by

an ounce every other night. Eventually he will learn to skip this

feeding. This tip is from the Ferber method. Some babies just

learn to expect a feeding when they really don't need it. It works

within a week or two.

I love that book, and it's been my sleep bible with both my kids.

My son is a good sleeper, except for this little night habit. My

daughter was a notoriously bad sleeper, but she was sleeping from

6:30pm to 6:30am by the time she was 7 months old. Ethan sleeps

about the same, except he wakes up for the bottle. He goes right

back to sleep after the bottle, but I have a hard time thinking he's

actually hungry, considering how well he eats during the day.

Try changing the time of this bottle. It might take a couple nights but you have to break the cycle to break the habit. Try waking him at a different time to give the bottle(i.e. right before you go to bed or other time). This worked with my son. Hope you come up with something. Good luck!
