Guest guest
Hi there, Yes, I have noticed the same thing. My son has only been banded for two weeks and we rarely take him out anywhere, but just the other night we went out to eat at a restaurant and to the grocery store. Believe it or not, we were actually asked FIVE TIMES "what's wrong with him" or "what happened"!!! The audacity and nerve of people amaze me. I'm trying to use people's ignorance and rudeness as a tool to educate them on the condition and explain to them exactly what's happening - every time I explained it they looked even more confused! LOL. I just know that I, personally, would never go up to a parent of a child who had ANY type of oddity, be it a helmet, a wheel chair, breathing device, even a cast, and have the nerve to actually ask about it. I guess there are always those people out there though... I know how you feel...I have a two year old and my five month old (he's banded) and everyone used to goo-goo all over them in public...it seems as if they either ask rude questions now or avoid them altogether. BUT, perhaps a lot of it is my own paranoia as well. Just wanted you to know you're not alone... Very best, Mommy to Wes - 5 months old, DOCband since 3/10 In a message dated 3/24/2006 8:39:47 P.M. Guest guest
OK so I knew that the helmet would attract attention but this is crazy. Why is it bothering me so much? My banded baby is a twin so before the band we would get stopped every five minutes and told how cute they are :-). Now that he's wearing the band people stare and give side glances but they never say how cute they are anymore. Sigh. Are people mean or do they just not know what to say? I'm trying to remember whether I stared at banded babies in supermarkets. I don't think so. Can anyone relate?

Guest guest
I can totally relate. It's hard to take sometimes. But I've been pretty lucky lately..since his band is decorated..it helps. Especially having his name on it. Most will greet him and smile. Some people stare because they don't know if the child had surgery or has emotional issues like banging their heads and the band is needed to protect them. Who know..maybe some folks think I dropped my baby on his head! Either way..they are uncomfortable. I usually smile and say hello..this will usually prompt them to ask me what it's for and they are really great about it. Some look the other way. If they are a bit nasty..I just stare back. Hang in there..it does get better. How long has your baby been banded? What kind of band? --- In Plagiocephaly , " jenniferljb " <jenniferljb@...> wrote: > > OK so I knew that the helmet would attract attention but this is > crazy. Why is it bothering me so much? Guest guest
YES!! I hated the stares and rude people gawking at my baby. It bothered me the whole entire time my dd was banded. It even bothered my 2 older children b/c they noticed it too. It got the point that I would say really rude things to these people. I don't know why they did it but it bothered me a lot. My dd graduated in 2003 and I've yet to see another banded baby in my area. Hopefully you'll be one of the parents who gets over the stares quickly. Keep us posted on your little one's progress. -- In Plagiocephaly , " jenniferljb " <jenniferljb@...> wrote: > > OK so I knew that the helmet would attract attention but this is > crazy. Guest guest
Is the helmet decorated? I found that once I did that people didn't stare at the helmet so much. Also I had the newspaper do an article on Nolan and you would not believe how many people stopped starting and talked to me about seeing the article int he paper.....what a change! The key word is to educate......or just stare back! Meagan Nolan DOC 11/05-3/06jenniferljb <jenniferljb@...> wrote: OK so I knew that the helmet would attract attention but this is crazy. Guest guest
I am getting stares too...but Maxwell's helmet is decorated like a baseball helmet so I think people are trying to figure out if it's just a cute-sy sports helmet or something else!!! I also got a few t-shirts that say things like, " You should see the other kid " and " Just Re-shaping my head. " Those have been great at breaking the ice! Guest guest
How funny! We'll have to pick up some of those shirts. My son's helmet is blue with race cars, airplanes, etc. Today someone told us that they tgought the helmet was to protect him from bumping his head against the wall. sheesh. > > > > OK so I knew that the helmet would attract attention but this is > > crazy. Guest guest
I'm going to tell people that we rode our motorcycle to the store, park, library, etc. and that's why he's wearing a helmet :>) Has anyone ever handed out the business cards that are printed with an explanation of what plagio is?
