Amy,

I've never heard of that before. It says on Orthomerica's web site the

following:

How do I clean Orthomerica Cranial Remolding Orthoses?

The cranial orthoses manufactured by Orthomerica can all be cleaned

with 78-99% rubbing alcohol. Wet a soft cloth with the alcohol and

vigorously wipe out the entire inside of the orthosis once a day when

you remove the orthosis for your baby's bath. This will help prevent

bacteria from building up on the inner liner and will reduce the odor

that is sometimes present. Make sure the alcohol is completely dry

before placing the orthosis back on the baby's head. If you live in a

sunny climate, place the band in the sun after cleaning it to help it

dry. The baby's head should be washed daily with a mild baby shampoo

that will not hurt the eyes. Aveeno shampoo, or Tea tree oil shampoo

made by a company called can soothe some scalp irritations that

can occassionally occur because of heat buildup and perspiration

inside the orthosis.

It doesn't say anything about cleaning the band with tea tree oil. I'd

ask your ortho again, just to clarify.

Take care,

Ack! That was what I was afraid of. I did ask my ortho to clarify

yesterday, and I said, " isn't there a shampoo made from tea tree oil

that you can use for their hair? " and she said she'd never heard of

that, she'd only heard of using it to clean the band. She even wrote

it on our instruction sheet right next to where it says to clean with

alcohol. Oy, this doesn't inspire my confidence about her ability to

treat Noah if she's telling us to clean the band incorrectly! I

think I'm going to have to monitor his progress very closely to make

sure we're actually getting correction. Thanks for responding!

Amy,

I would seriously question this ortho's level of experience treating

plagio babies. These bands in the hands of inexperienced orthos can

and do cause more harm. Do you know how many plagio babies she's

treated successfully?

I think she's done at least 5 or 6 courses of treatment. Her

partner, however, has done many more, but she's out on maternity

leave. She'll be back in about two weeks. I'm thinking I should

question my current ortho and verify exactly how many she's done, and

then ask if we can be switched to the other ortho when she gets

back. I've read alot of the stories about how harm can be done and

that it's all in the hands of the ortho. I honestly wasn't worried

at all about her, until it started to seem that I know more about

some of this than she does, and I've been reading about it for less

than a month now. Thanks for confirming that I have some reason to

be suspicious. I'll let you know what we decide to do!

Hi,

If she's only done 5 or 6 bands you're really going to have to be on

your toes!!! A lot can happen in 2 weeks. If your baby gets any red

marks that don't fade with in the hour off the band needs to be

adjusted. I'd definitely ask to only see the other ortho. Keep us posted.
