HI! I'm Jen and my dd is Tallulah. I'm new here - just joined the

Tort. Board last month. My daughter is almost 4 mo. old - was

diagnosed w/ Tort. @ 3 mo. old.

Initally at birth she was diagnosed w/ a facial nerve or muscle

paralysis on the left side. They said it would go away in a few

days.(it's still there) The next day I noticed that her face was

asymmetrical - smaller on the leftside. I also saw that her neck

seemed concave under her ear on the leftside. The drs told me not to

worry it would resolve itself. By 1 week old I noticed that her

jawbone/gumline was slanted - Higher on the left side slanting down to

the right. I took her to the pediatrician who referred us to a

cranio-facial team. I was afraid it was " hemifacial microsomia " but

they said no. They then told us that it should resolve by her 1st

birthday. I had noticed in the days before the cranio-facial appt.

that her head always faced to the right. They quickly showed me a

stretch to do w/ every diaper change. Then it just seemed to be

getting worse, or at least more pronounced. She couldn't lift her

head during " tummy time " . She fought every time I tried to stretch

her and cries out in pain. I took her back to the pediatrician at 3

months old and she was diagnosed with Congenital Muscle Torticollis.

I had done alot of research online and figured that is what was going

on. I asked for x-rays or an ultrasound or something to confirm it

was muscle and not a malformation of her spine. I was told " No, it

couldn't be " . After I pushed, I was finally referred to Physical

Therapist. A few days after the " tort " diagnosis I noticed my

daughters back was curved, her hips were slanted or uneven and it

seemed one of her legs were longer than the other. I took her to the

pediatrician and was told it is her body compensating for her neck. I

know I'm not crazy. There is more going on here with my daughter than

I think the dr. is paying attention to. I'm not sure if it's

relatedor not but my daughter also has several birthmarks - A big one

on her forehead, one on each eyelid, on her nose and on her lower back.

She is not getting a mis-shapen head so I can here. We are seeing a

Cranio-Facial team on Tuesday to get thier opinion.

Sorry this is so long - Just wanted to say HI! and tell you about us!

Hi Jen ( & Tallulah),

Welcome to the group! I am new the group myself, having joined just last week. My son does not have tort., but severe brachycephaly (flat back of head) and moderate plagiocephaly (flattened left side of head with asymmetry).

I have found this group to be such wonderful thing in such a confusing, stressful and scary time. While our situations are different, I know that our emotions are probably very similar. Please know that we are all here for you if you have questions or if you just need to vent! :)

Tallulah is beautiful and her web page is very neat! I also love her name...

I wish you and Tallulah the very best and please make sure to keep us updated on her progress moving forward.

Very best,

Mommy to Wes - 5 months old, 2 weeks into DOCband therapy

Welcome Jen,

I am glad you found us. I would like to just tell you always follow

your mommy instinct, you have done great so far. Tort. can be

associated with hip dysplasia and all the other stuff you mentioned,

even the nerve palsy, but it can also be cause by something

underlying that caused the tort itself. Have you seen a pediatric

orthopaedic doctor yet? See if you can find one in your area to have

the hips checked thoroughly, and the spine. You may have to see an

maxiofacial surgeon for the jaw issues. If you have a shriners

hospital near you or can travel to that would be great. Aside from

providing free care they would be able to address all the issues. I

wish you luck with the cranio facial team, let us know what they say.
