Guest guest
Guys, We took Aidans bi weekly head pictures tonight and his head looks like an alien!!!!! Hes getting increased head height, less than one week after we went to the neurosurgeon and he said all was fine. We even talked about increased head height, and I ASKED if he thought Aidan had that. He said no. PLEASE look at the pictures in the photos section under Aidan C. I am beside myself!! Even my husband is freaking out, and he is usually the calmer one. Were going tomorrow morning right over there. What am I going to do?? I know they are going to say it will work itself out and argue that " its fine. " Its NOT fine!! They cant take the front part of that helmet out, or take out the foam without compromising the rest of the helmets effectiveness. I cant see how theyre going to solve this. Aidan is only at 5mm, hes not done yet with his treatment. Help! Frustrated beyond belief, beth

Guest guest
beth, I have been studying Aidan's previous photos from 3/8, and the current one you posted today, the side views, side-by-side. I concur that you should visit your ortho asap with your concerns. I'm a bit confused... what type of band is Aiden in? Are you all in a NOPCO Starband helmet? I'm just wondering because you said you addressed your head height qs with the neuro, and not the orthotist. Will you be visiting the orthotist tomorrow? I know that orthotists can sometimes be more sensitive to aesthetic concerns that neuros. The changes I am seeing from the side view photographs are: that his head is sloping more steeply from his forehead to his crown, and that his crown is higher and more sharply defined. This sounds like what you are describing seeing as well. My perception is that Aiden had what appeared to be a bit of more than usual head height at the start of treatment; would you say so, also? If this were the case, then a normal watch-out for the ortho would have been to ensure that the head height was kept in check during the treatment course, I guess. I will yield to more band-knowledgeable mods and members on exact protocol, but from what I understand, the way bands/helmets " correct " head height issues is to fill in the area over the forehead and at the back of the head to make the head height " disappear, " if you will. A good question to ask is why Aiden's slope appears to be steeper instead of more level, and can they make some foam adjustment to help with that. Since the change in his head height is not what you were hoping for, I don't think I would put the helmet on him until I got the inside of the helmet squared away. I very much wish I could offer you more advice or help!! We aggressively repo'd Remy, so I don't have personal experience with band adjustments, etc. I hope other group members will chime in soon after looking at Aiden's photos. Please let us know what happens in the morning. Can you bring the pics of your baby to the appt. so that the ortho can see what is going on? Take care, Christie (Mom to Repo'd Remy) > > Guys, > > We took Aidans bi weekly head pictures tonight and his head looks like an alien!!!!! Guest guest
Christie, You are correct. His band was supposed to be holding the crown of his head so it couldn't grow up. It obviously hasn't done that and his head grew up instead of out. :-( I too see exactly what you are describing with the sloping of his head. I hate that this is STILL happening to babies. I just don't understand how these people get away with it. :-( -- In Plagiocephaly , " redlocks2003 " <clkline@...> wrote: > > beth, > > I have been studying Aidan's previous photos from 3/8, and the current > one you posted today, the side views, side-by-side. Guest guest
the helmet is absolutely off now-we are going in there tomorrow morning with him and pictures. can he recover from this?? does the fact that hes gone from a 9mm assymetry to a 5mm mean anything? there has been improvment on that end, so how could this have happened???? we had an adustment last week, did she make it too loose? i thought it was too loose but the ortho said it was fine. did this happen in a week?? > > > > > > Guys, > > > > > > We took Aidans bi weekly head pictures tonight and his head looks > > like an alien!!!!! Guest guest
beth, I have seen the pics too and I agree that there is extra height. You are doing the right thing by removing that helmet and going over in the morning. I don't see how they can explain that that is alright. I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. I'm sure you have heard it all before, but in a situation like this, where he will need a band to correct the plagio and the problems this helmet has caused you need to go to CT. I'm sending big hugs your way and please let us know what happens. CAROLG > > Guys, > > We took Aidans bi weekly head pictures tonight and his head looks like an alien!!!!! Guest guest
Based on the pics from 3/8 versus last night I would say it happened in about 2 weeks. Of course he could have had the growth spurt in the past week. I too see what everyone is talking about. It's possible if they cut too much out of the bottom maybe it slipped forward on his eyes too much and allowed head height. However, knowing how my daughter's band fits and hers slips forward all the time and she is filling in the bottom of her head I'm just confused. I can't say with any confidence what happened on the inside of the band to make his head worse. I saw from previous posts that his head was improving which is great. Going from 9 to 5 is wonderful. I looked at the early March pics compared to the start in Jan. I can see big improvements. Is it possible it looks worse because his chin is tucked in? I saw in one of the march 8 pics that his chin was tucked too and this one looks worse but I just want to make sure it's not an optical illusion. I agree with the previous post about neurosurgeons not being all that keen on asthetics. He could have had the increased head height then but the dr wouldn't notice. Definite red flags. Please keep us posted. Guest guest
beth, I am so sorry! I saw the pictures and understand your concern. NOPCO has a reputation of playing CYA when they cause an additional deformity. PLease remember that today. Since your neuro didn't seem to be very CT friendly can you take Aidan to a plastic surgeon? This must have happened really quickly. Did CT take pictures at last week's consult? I would call them and email them your pictures to see what they think. Please consider taking a stand against NOPCO. It is nice to hear of good things from there but they shouldn't also be coupled with the frequent problems that we hear of. There was another post from a mom last month. I think her handle was missingma. You can do a search. If someone actually put up a fit maybe they would better train their orthotists. If they tell you today that everything looks fine I would really question their competence. Good luck today. You're on my mind!

Guest guest
Wow, that does appear to be a very pronounced difference. Hopefully the angle of the head/camera is contributing to it some. Definitely keep that helmet off him and seek treatment elsewhere. Don't give them another chance after already making his head worse. His head can improve 9mm to 5mm in asymmetry and also gain height and forehead angling at the same time. The shape of the band and the forces it applies can easily deform the head if the helmet is not addressing the proper areas--either b/c of a bad scan, cast, or inexperienced ortho. I'm glad you guys noticed that now b/c once you have established height there is no way to " push " it back down. All you can do is get a properly fitting helmet that will keep him from gaining anymore height and allow the other parts of his head to catch up. As the growth is redirected to other areas the height will soften. So yes, it can get better in the area they're measuring, but worse in other areas. The helmet may have been too tight in areas where it shouldn't have been, therefore leaving the only way to grow as upward. The head won't naturally grow upward-- only when there is an outside force making do that--like a bouncy seat, swing, or ill fitting band. It's difficult b/c you can't " fix " height once it's established by pushing it back in like I said, so you need to get him in a proper fitting band ASAP so he doesn't get any more height. I'd consider taking action against that helmet provider if those pictures indeed reflect that much worsening in reality. Guest guest
beth, I just wanted to say that I am so sorry that you are going through this and I hope that you can get your son in a different band or what ever is needed to be done to fix this problem.
