Hi all,

I'm sure this is a silly question, but as I'm pretty new to all of this and constantly obsessing over my son's head now (I'm sure you can relate), I'm wondering something about the fit of his DOCband...

He has severe Brachycephaly and the back of his head is very flat. However, after two adjustments, the back of his band still seems to fit snugly against the back of his head but the FRONT of the band (where no growth was needed) is loose, falling down quite a bit and you can see daylight between it and his forehead! I have no doubt that the people at CT have a grand plan and know what they're doing, but I would LOVE some reassurance from some of you experienced parents out there that this is a normal fit at first and perhaps why it works this way? It is just hard for me to understand how the BACK of his head could be allowed growth room when there doesn't seem to be much room back there but a TON of room in the front???

NOTE: At both adjustments my therapist has shaved some out of the front of the band for whatever reason, although it hasn't seemed tight there.

Any experiences shared, ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated! I asked the therapist (who is not our usual therapist - ours is on vacation) and her answer wasn't of much help to me...it was a sort of "calm down, you're obsessing, there's a grand plan, just let it work itself out" type of answer - this doesn't help me to understand the logic of how it all works!

I've attached a couple of recent pictures of my 5 mo. old son in his band for you all...I know it's likely you can't tell anything from this picture about the fit, but at least you can put a face to my query! :) (I'm just a proud momma...try to ignore the excessive amounts of drool...)

Thanks to you all,

Hi Stacey,

What a fantastic explanation! Everything you said made perfect sense (and made me feel silly for not figuring it out on my own! :) Thanks so much for taking the time to explain it to me - I will insist on an explanation from my regular therapist when she comes back - I think it's so vital that we at least understand the reasoning behind the methods of therapy that are being introduced.

Stacey, do you have pictures of your son (before and after) posted in the pics pages? I'd love to see the progress he made...I worry so much that my son's severe brachy can only progress so far, you know?

Thanks so much again,

Hi:

I know exactly what you are talking about " seeing daylight. " I will

say that we see daylight both in the front and in the back though.

Our son has severe brachy (and plagio) and was DOC banded in Feb.

CT warned us that we would see those spaces and that it would shift

some and our PT even showed us the shift. I am no technical expert,

but the part I do understand is that when the babies are SOOO flat

in the back the band doesn't have very much to " hold " onto. Our son

has been banded for about 6 weeks and we see less of that " air " and

shifting because his headed has rounded out some in the back.

Have you been to the CT website? They have links to some technical

type articles and also their director of R & D responds to posts

fairly frequently on there when parents have technical sorts of

questions.

You probably know this already, but the bands are not quite as

effective for brachy for the very reason that they don't " hold "

quite as well. Even still, we are seeing our son's head looking

much more normal. I think just keeping him from sleeping flat on

that spot has helped as much as anything (we cannot get the little

bugger to roll over OR sleep on his stomach!!)

I don't think I have helped at all, just wanted to say that I know

exactly what you are talking about!

Hi - You are not obsessing...even though we are not the experts, we are the parents...so that's what we do.... I know how you feel we went in 2 times this week & since Mendy was out we got another girl, who was basically giving us the same vibe..to relax.....I would think you would need more growth room in the back, since you need it to fill out there. So I would keep asking....for $2700..they can take a few obsessive parents. :-) CT seems to be highly recommended ... & they seem very nice...but it seems like sometime their answers are "textbook"..my son was born with a Cephalahematoma on the top right back of his head which has calcified to bone.....they just keep telling us that Ryder has a difficult to head to work with & giving us somewhat generic answers...so we are hanging in there..but absolutley not worring about calling them & asking all the

questions we have.... Sorry to rant..we are only 2 weeks in, and I just think I am kind of down about the whole thing right now. Wendi Hi all, I'm sure this is a silly question, but as I'm pretty new to all of this and constantly obsessing over my son's head now (I'm sure you can relate), I'm wondering something about the fit of his DOCband...

I asked the therapist (who is not our usual therapist - ours is on vacation) and her answer wasn't of much help to me...it was a sort of "calm down, you're obsessing, there's a grand plan, just let it work itself out" type of answer - this doesn't help me to understand the logic of how it

all works! I've attached a couple of recent pictures of my 5 mo. old son in his band for you all...I know it's likely you can't tell anything from this picture about the fit, but at least you can put a face to my query! :) (I'm just a proud momma...try to ignore the excessive amounts of drool...) Hi Wendi,

Thanks so much for the reassurance and support.

I am really down about the whole thing right now too. I can't seem to get any answers without my usual therapist and at our last adjustment there hasn't been NEARLY as much correction as I thought (in my fantasy world) there had been when comparing his head with the headsicle. Since my son is brachy (flat in back) AND slightly plagio (asymmetrical on the left side) we have to work to correct the asymmetry first before we can even start on the flattening. This frustrates me because I really want to get the back worked on - it is the most obvious! I know there's a method to the madness and a reason they do things the way they do, but as a mommy it is just so hard not to understand completely. The asymmetry is SO not noticeable to me but so far it is all we've worked on!

I completely agree with you about CT being the best in the biz, AND that they do, indeed, provide "textbook answers" so far. Last week we had to remove my son's band for over 24 hours due to a "rub burn" on his forehead from his band being too loose and him scooting his head side to side. It was obviously a "rub burn", however when I spoke with my substitute therapist today (and showed her a picture!) she said it was definitely a heat rash (which I've noticed they tell EVERYBODY). I know it was not a heat rash. I have two kids and know exactly what a heat rash looks like and he hasn't been hot or sweaty for one second in his band. Frustrating...

I'm kind of like you - I've started to keep my many questions to myself anymore...I'm that frustrated. I had a list of questions I wanted to ask at my appt. but I ended up not asking most of them because we were sort of "shoo-shoo'd" off and hurried out of there. I keep telling myself I will just ask his regular therapist next week when she returns.

I'm sorry to rant as well - it's just nice to have someone to vent to that understands! I know we are only two weeks in as well so it's hard to feel so down about it all already...maybe it gets better and easier from here???

Thanks again,

Sitting here laughing, because I just repeated the explanation we

got for why our band was shifting. It was pure plagiarism!!

No pictures posted--sorry. But if it makes you feel better, I will

say that his progress is notieceable even to grandparents, aunts,

friends (all those people who do NOT obsess!) His CR was 100%,

which I think is 5 standard deviations from the norm so we are by no

means expecting a perfectly round head at graduation. (CT was

upfront with us that our son was a case that could take more than

one band. I am not sure we will choose to do that even if they

recommend/suggest it though.)

We are pretty happy that he already has a normal-ish looking head to

just glance at it. Of course, to any parent on this board or any

doctor who knew enough he will always have a slightly weird noggin.

But we think he is adorable from the front (LOL!)n . Perhaps most

important, our ped now feels like he already sees enough correction

that he isn't concerned about him medically (he was getting really

squashed ear canals, pre banding, for instance). Also, we are

seeing his tort resolve. So don't despair -- progress will surely

come! If you look in the pictures on this board their are some

pretty dramatic brachy baby before and afters.

Hi Stacey,

Your son's progress sounds fantastic! We completely know that most people do not have perfectly symmetrical heads and we do not expect our son's to end up "perfect" by any means - we just want it to look "normal", you know? I don't ever want him to dislike it when he looks in the mirror or to have anyone make fun of it - that would just kill me!

We were told by CT that our son would only be banded for about 6-8 weeks, but I seriously do not see how that is possible. It's already been two and I just don't see much progress. We have so far to go!

Thanks again for sharing your child's wonderful progress thus far...it reassures me that things will get better! :)
