Guest guest
Hello Rachd1961@..., In reference to your comment: è has anyone had this stuff....is it dangerous Barium is completely inert, not absorbed and not allergenic. However, some people are allergic to the flavoring in the Barium mixture and I have very rarely seen a case of hives and itching from the Strawberry flavor in patients who are allergic to Strawberries. Precaution: Barium UGI is not a good idea if there is a colonic obstruction because the Barium tends to turn into a solid bolus in the colon just before the obstructing lesion. This may be difficult to remove later. Also Barium is not a good idea if a CT SCAN is planned for the patient, since the Barium stays in the colon for a few days and makes it impossible to obtain a good quality CAT SCAN of the abdomen because the barium is too radio-dense for the CAT Scanner. Constipation: After the UGI Barium Exam, make sure you drink a lot of fluids and take a laxative to flush out the Barium from the Colon. The barium sometimes tends to solidify and turn into " cement " if fluid intake is reduced. This leads to a very uncomfortable constipation. I had a study some years ago.... I didnt have any problems at all.. just make sure that if you have this study done, that you drink LOTS of water afterwards to get the stuff out of your system... Your poo will be white too..LOL

Guest guest
Just wondering if your children all had to have a CT scan before you could go further with the banding/helmet process? is scheduled for her CT on Thursday but I am not sure if I want her to have it. My mom works in an E.R. and she asked two of her pediatrician friends about it and both of them said DO NOT let that baby get a CT scan. One said it is way too much radiation for a baby that size and the other said it could lead to secondary tumors. She said that just a regular skull series xray would give the same results regarding the sutures and if they are closing prematurely. I am so scared now and do not know what to do. Any advice? in Idaho 5 mos

Guest guest
Ask you dr. why a CT scan, and not the x-rays. There must be something more in depth that they want to see. CT scans are better pictures that x-rays, and MRI's are even better. My son (age 5 & 6 mos.) had the skull/neck series x-rays to confirm brachy and tort for the insurance co. The neurologist and neursurgeon wanted a CT-scan to see why his head was growing so big so fast. ( his head is in the top 95%, but so is he.) They were ruling out hydrocepalitus (water on the brain). Nothing showed up, and we could go ahead w/ the bandig process. But I would defently ask your dr. why the CT scan. Guest guest
We had to get a CT scan (as well as x-rays) for our son when he was only a few weeks old. They were ruling out sagittal craniosynostosis because the shape of his head looked *exactly* like he had it, even though his suture seemed opened. He didn't have it -- the head shape happened because of his position inutero. He just turned 6, and so far everything is fine. A year or so after he had it, a lot of articles came out about the amount of radiation in CT scans, etc, and I do believe (though I'm not positive about this, just something that I recall) that recommendations were put in place for child/infant CT scans radiation levels. I do remember being alarmed about these articles, so I understand your concern. However, many times, depending on what Doctors are looking for, CT scans are better to see some areas than regular x-rays -- so I wouldn't totally disregard it. Get some information from the doctor who prescribed it, and ask questions about the things that concern you. Take Care. Guest guest
I just wanted to jump in here and say that my youngest Daughter had a CT scan (regular and 3D) at 6 months old to rule out cranio before she got her band. I don't really think it is that big of a deal to get one... it won't harm her and it is over very quickly. I never heard of anything about too much radiation or possibility of tumors. I think if that was a real concern, then specialists wouldn't order CT scans for a baby that little. Anyway, yes... sometimes they can see cranio in regular x rays, however, from what I have read and learned, the 3D Ct scan is the best way to be able to make sure that there is no cranio (since it can see everything in much more detail than an x-ray). Guest guest
, It is true that a skull series can show the same results as a CT, except in the case of a situation like, " sticky sutures " . These are sutures that may or may not be partially fused and are difficult to see on regular x rays. Your options are to get just the xrays done and if they come back showing no closures then great, but if they come back with a questionable result, you will then have to have a CT scan to find out about the sticky or partial suture problem. My opinion would be that if the plagio is mild to moderate than go with the xrays and hope for the best, if the plagio is high moderate to severe than go with the CT scan, but that's just my opinion.
