Permanately Damaged Parathyroids

Ok folks...

Went to see the surgeon today and for the fourth time since surgery

he has said that " I believe your parathyroids to be permanately

damaged " . So I believe that he knows something I don't know and they

are obviously damaged in someway that he knew from the gittgo. He

was probably trying to be the " hopeful doc " and hope for the best at

the same time warning me that the parathyroids were damaged beyond

repair to begin with.

He did not ask for calcium levels to be checked as he believes that

the endo should be doing this (I have contacted the endo to request

this bloodwork and haven't gotten a call back yet). I am currently

taking a over the counter calcium supplement of 600 mg 3 x a day and

a rocaltrol prescription once a day. I find that I also have to

supplement all of this with the occassional tums as well when I feel

twitching or a muscle spasm.

I realize that it isn't so darned terrible that I have to take

calcium supplements...I am a women of 38...so I need it anyway it is

just I wish they would just give me some real answers instead of the

vague " I think " answers. I want to know for sure.

Does anyone know how they test to see if your parathyroids are

working? And if it is by testing your calcium levels in the body

wouldn't me taking supplements be affecting the correct ready when

the do so?

Thanks,
