Re: Eating out fast food?

When we go to Mc's, I just order a Cheeseburger Happy Meal, without the bun. They take the burger out of "storage" (they are stored in a warming drawer sans buns) and put it in a salad container (although once I got it in a Chicken Nuggets box...which was funny...) with lettuce and all the "stuff". We go to McD's all the time with no problems. If we go in, I can see them making his burger and they do a great job!

I'm hoping you all can help clear something up for me. I can't figure out how it is safe to eat at any fast food place, even if there are gf menu items. We are supposed to be so careful and concerned about cross-contamination in our home. I was my hands about a zillion times a day while preparing food for various family members, keep all gf and regular foods and utensils, etc, separate, make sure the counters are clean, etc. etc. So how can you be sure those teenagers at Mcs are making your food on a clean surface with clean hands, etc? I just don't get it. I am not asking this to be a smart-aleck or anything, I really want to know how it works. Do I say certain things to the counter help? Please help me with this. I'd love to be able to take my dc to McD's or Taco Bell every once in a while, but I don't dare. Thanks,Laurie in NJ__________________________________________________________________Switch to Netscape Internet Service. As low as $9.95 a month -- Sign up today at http://isp.netscape.com/registerNetscape. McD's has to be safer than KFC. At KFC they're dredging the chicken

there and so flour is flying all about. At McD's, the buns are already

pre-fab'd. There's no flour flying about. As long as they don't put

the burger on a bun and then say " OOOPS " and peel same burger off the

bun to give to you, you should be OK.

I can't comment on Taco Bell. Too small a fraction of my family likes

that place, so we haven't gone there in the days since GF.

Personally, I'm partial to 's. A chili and a baked potato is

right up my alley. But I'm the GF, not my kids. If my kids become GF,

I'm not sure what we'll do. They're not big chili eaters. :-)

You can ask them to don clean gloves. That's not an outrageous

request. At the little breakfast nook we go to sometimes, the cooks

will don clean gloves for me before they even crack my eggs.

It helps to really get to know whatever restaurants (fast food or

not) you choose. I seem to be a creature of habit and go to the same

ones all the time, especially if they are helpful and understanding.

About the only fast food I do anymore is 's. The chili, baked

potatoes, fruit salad, and fries (if they use a dedicated fryer)

appear to be relatively safe choices because there is very little

contact with other products. In the beginning, I ate A LOT of

's chili. Good thing it was winter and I like it.

I also like Subway for really good salads. But you have to make sure

that they change gloves and use a clean knife if they cut anything

for you.

I keep a close eye on my food if at all possible to make sure they

don't do something that is obviously dangerous. That's one of the

reasons I like Waffle House for breakfast, I can make sure that they

really leave the toast off and don't just remove it before the plate

comes out. That and they have dedicated grill space for everything.

I have sent my share of plates back, though.

Ultimately, anytime you eat out you can never be 100% sure. You've

relinquished some control.

My husband orders chili, with cheese on the side. I order a potato,

still in the wrapper. I take my own butter and sour cream (allergic

to soy). I take his cheese and chili seasoning (mostly corn syrup,

so he won't touch it) and put it all on my potato. Quite tasty. ;)

Some 's do NOT put the potatoes in foil. I avoid those, but

more because of my soy allergy.

You can also ask for a bag of corn chips for the chili instead of the

crackers they usually give.
