Amy,

It is so hard for me to answer those questions because I am definitely not

schedule oriented. I would start with one regular meal a day and see how he

does with that and then add in another regular mealtime. Don't rush. The

first bit of time with solids is truly experimental and the real nutrition

comes from you. Keep that in mind. Nurse him before you feed him, and

after if he wants. Water isn't necessary if you are nursing him before or

after a meal. You can give him a sippy cup of breastmilk or water if you

want him to get used to that. I would personally recommend skipping cereal.

Soft foods that you can cut in chunks are great for Ryker to practice his

pincer grasp. (Pear, avocado, baked sweet potato, and banana) Jarred food

isn't necessary either but can be convenient. I highly recommend that if

you use jarred food that you buy an brand that uses organic produce. The

pesticide concentrations in baby food can be quite high. More than

following a schedule I suggest you really follow your instincts. How is the

daycare situation going? Have you been able to figure anything out? I am

hoping that it all works out quickly and easily.

OK, Ryker is giving me all the signals that he is ready for solids and I

have tried a few things and he is more receptive now.

Since I would like to continue nursing for as long as possible and then

let him self wean, what sort of routine with solids should I plan? I am

a very schedule-oriented type person. Should I plan for him to have a

fruit and veggie at lunch and supper and then nurse the rest of the day?

I have read that I can skip cereal.

For those of you who use jar foods, what kind of routine do you have? Do

you nurse before or after? Do you give water in a sippy cup with the

meal?

Sorry so many questions, but I am just wondering.

I always fed Keely at meal times and let her nurse whenever she wanted. I didn't used jarred food with her, just made homemade veggies, mashed up bananas, as she got older, just gave her what we were eating. She would play with sippy cups of water or diluted juice with her meals as she got older. She is 2 1/2 and still nursing so it didn't interfere at all lol

all of my lll and lc friends say always nurse first. jar foods, in general,

are about the same imo. you may want to think of using some un flavored

table foods or avocado, sweet potato or banana also make good first foods.

Amy,

I am so glad to hear you got the daycare situation straightened up. Sounds

like Ryker likes it a lot better already. Is it still close enough to your

work? I do think that you should let the other daycare know of your

feelings, even if you need to write them.

RE: I am confused

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to give you an update about the daycare situation. My mother

led me to the grandmother of one of her students and it turned out that

Alice is willing to keep Ryker! Today was his first day and even though

he cried a bit each time I left, he napped and even smiled for her! I am

so happy. The pressure for bottles/solids is off and we are back to

normal again!

I took him to the doctor Monday for his cough and he weighs 20 pounds,

14 oz at 7 months. The doctor told me not to worry about the solids

because it is obvious that he isn't missing any meals.

I had originally left him at daycare Monday, but ended up picking him up

about an hour later when I went to feed him because he was so upset.

When I went back later that afternoon to pick up my older son, I ran

into the head baby room worker who quizzed me about whether we had been

practicing with a sippy cup over the weekend. I told her that Ryker can

drink water out of one and then she said water simply wouldn't do that

he needs milk!

Then, she went on about jarred baby food and cereal and how OTHER

mothers bring these items for their babies. I just told her that I am an

alternative mother and left it at that. There wasn't much sense in

unloading on her when I was unsure about the daycare situation. However,

now that I have another sitter, I think I will probably have to explain

that mothers should not have to answer to her about their feeding

decisions!

Wendi,

Ryker's sitter is on the way to the newspaper, so it is a perfect

location. I definitely plan to express my feelings to the daycare owner

about pushing solids. Thanks so much for your support!

There is a breastfeeding support walk this weekend in Paducah, KY that I

am planning to attend. It will be great to meet other bfeeding mothers.

I am also planning to join a regional bfeeding task force to help boost

awareness.

Nurse first, bm in the cup if anything. Once a day to start--we did veggies

first, but DS didn't like cereal.

This time I am doing cereal first (I have it already--a gift). Then

veggies.

I used jars with #1--convenient--if big eater--expensive. This time I am

making my own--freeze tablespoon size scoops in the ice cube tray--then put

in baggies to store. Defrost one or two in microwave to make a meal.

As for schedule (and I like this too) only give him his food at one

time--say lunch or dinner--and nurse the rest of the time.

I also store my food in the freezer with the tupperware freeze and fresh ice

tray because it has a lid that seals and you won't get that freezer burn

smell in the food! If you want to know where to purchase them just let me

know.

My son is 8 months and he only eats about once a day solids. He prefers

little pieces of soft ripe fruits and soft veggies. I have only given

him the primary first foods, apples, bananas, peaches, pears, plums,

green beans, peas, squash, carrots, sweet potatoes. He hates cereal and

so I don't feed it to him. I don't think there are any rules to follow

when it comes to feeding your baby solids. I would do what feels right

to you judging from your baby's reactions. My son is content with

Mommy's milk and doesn't bother much with solids. He would probably eat

them more if I didn't offer him the breast first but I'd rather him have

the breast than the solids. He will enjoy food for the rest of his life

and Mommy's milk is the most beneficial thing for him right now. He is a

big boy, thriving and progressing rapidly, so I'm not concerned that he

needs more.
