Val,

I'm sorry about not knowing about your previous clarification on the

SickKids modification. I am only intermittantly on the group site

now, and must have missed your post about that!

One of the best ways to tell if a product is active or passive is to

look at the estimated adjustment schedule. This takes ortho opinion

and terminology out of the equation. In younger babies, active bands

are adjusted every 2 weeks (every 1 week in very, very young babies,)

and passive helmets are adjusted every 4 weeks or more. In older

babies such as Mark, active products might be adjusted every 3 weeks

or so. I know it has only been two months, but how frequently did

your ortho estimate Mark would need to be seen? Every 3 weeks? Every

month? Every 6 weeks?

I understand that the ortho really convinced you to go with the

modified SickKids. This is hindsight, and maybe you did ask, but I

would like to know how long ago they made this change to the helmet,

how many older babies (older than one year) have they treated to

graduation with this modified helmet, and so on. That information is

more applicable to your situation than is a bunch of younger babies

getting rapid improvement with their new helmet. The guidelines for

the SickKids helmet clearly say:

" If a helmet is to be effective, it should be instituted prior to this

time. Ideally, the best time is between 6 to 7 months of age, but this

depends on your particular baby. Usually, the helmet is worn until 12

months of age. Sometimes, the doctor decides that the helmet needs to

be worn for a longer period of time. "

That description is quite different that starting a baby in this

helmet at 12 months of age. Do they have the data to change their own

protocol recommendations yet? That is what I would want to know.

All that aside, I want to say that Mark is definitely rounding. The

DOCband is a benchmark product, for sure. It would be impossible to

predict correction, though. It's easy to focus on the the flattened

area when looking for rounding, but correction seems to start around

the back of the head and meander its way over to the ear, if you know

what I mean.
