Guest guest
Hi all, I saw my neph today, and he was quite pleased with progress so far....although for a little while, he gave me such a fright. Last lab work (July 22) indicates creatinine level at 257 (lowest ever apparently, and this being on Diovan too!). Still low proteinuria (0.3) and no blood at all. However, the previous lab work in June and July had him seriously concerned. My creatinine shot up to over 300 during that time!!! And then this very last result. Is this normal? What kind of factors - diet, exercise, stress, etc. - might affect it? I just always assumed it was some sort of gradual trend....didn't think creatinine levels ever spiked or anything like that. The minor annoyances or downsides to this pred treatment is that I gained 10 lbs since my Vancouver trip in June (which so far I haven't been able to get rid of, despite being active) and terrible, terrible acne. Even worse than when I was a teen - and that was bad! And I swear, that 10 lbs is all sitting firmly in my gut...right where I don't want it. I am hoping the Pilates I'm doing will reduce that area....even if it doesn't, I'm happy with the exercise anyway. I'm happy tho, I only need to do lab tests once a month now, not every two weeks. And I don't need to see him until end of Sept also, right around the time when I should start getting weaned off the pred. I'm so glad things are working out. I just hope beyond all hopes that the pred will continue to improve my kidney function. Anyways, gotta run. So happy so much good news here. : ) Sophia
Guest guest
It's encouraging to see creatinine lower, which is always better than higher, but there really isn't a huge difference between 260 and 300. It's almost within the margin of error of the test. Mine varied between numbers like that many times. One huge factor that can affect it is being dehydrated or not, and, if there is any change in your muscle mass, for whatever reason (diet can be a factor here). More muscle, higher creatinine. If you lose some muscle mass, lower creatinine. If you don't eat enough protein, the creatinine number might be lower because your losing muscle mass, or it could be higher because your body is cannibalizing its own muscle tissue for protein. I'm not saying any of those things are a factor in your case, but they are all reason why creatinine might vary. It can also vary if you use a different lab from the previous time, as different labs might use a different methodology. Your proteinuria sure is a good sign though, as low as it is. That one is indisputable. Guest guest
I'm so glad you got good news. Keep thems levels low and good luck with the Pilates. I have a belly swelling problem also, it looks like I'm 9 months pregnant with triplets sometimes, it does go down but it's real tight and painfull for a couple of days. I was only on the Prednisone for a month but that was some of the worst acne I've had, it was even on my chest and back. Now that I've started dialysis even my usual breakouts are gone. Guest guest
Sophia, I was miserable with Prednisone. I am still on it but a much lower dose. I can't wait to be off of it. I never had a zit in my life before this. I also gained a ton of weight, which is slowly coming off now that we are weaning off the pred, but no matter what I ate or if I worked out, while I was on the pred the weight wouldn't come off. Mine, too, was all in my gut. It was like a spare tire above my belly button. Very disturbing! Good luck to you on your treatment. I know that Pred can do some wonderful things to treat problems even though the side effects are so nasty. > Hi all, > > I saw my neph today, and he was quite pleased with progress so > far....although for a little while, he gave me such a fright. > > Last lab work (July 22) indicates creatinine level at 257 (lowest > ever apparently, and this being on Diovan too!). Guest guest
Congrats on the good results Sophia! My creatinine has gone up and down quite a bit over the past few months. So far my neph isn't too worried about it unless he gets two high readings in a row. The abdominal swelling can be caused by the prednisone. I felt about 6 months pregnant the entire time I was on higher doses. I even had to buy larger pants and I hadn't gained a pound. Now that I've tapered down to 5mg I can fit into my old pants again and I don't feel so bloated all the time. Congrats again on the great visit. I about freaked when my neph said " see ya in 2 months. " My jaw dropped and I teased " Can I send you a 'missing you' card? " LOL!
