Guest guest
I have to say that just like active helmets/bands, there are different types of passive helmets. Some are just a shell, others have foam inside, etc. My son had a passive helmet with a foam interior so that adjustments could be made if necessary. In general, passive helmets are ususally looser than active helmets because they don't have holding points, per se. Some passive helmets require casting, while others are pre-sized. Connor got his helmet (actually looks more like a band) at 5 1/2 months (there weren't any active helmet options near us at the time) with approx. 10mm of assymetry. We were originally told that it would take 6 months for treatment, but he was actually done in 3. The first 2 months he didn't have much growth, but the final month he apparently had a growth spurt. With a passive helmet, vistits to the orthotist are every 3-4 weeks, compared to 1-2 with 'active' helmets, although we were told to watch for red spots. I kind of think Connor's helmet was somewhere inbetween a shell that's grown into and an a more active type of helmet. Anyway, if your interested, there are photos of the PPO helmet in the Files section under Helmet and Band brand photos. Connor did end up getting good correction with the helmet. He went from 10mm to 3mm in the helmet and improved more after graduation. I think a baby with moderate or worse plagio over 6 months would be better off with a more active type of helmet or band, but for Connor's mild/moderate case the passive helmet worked just fine. Guest guest
Hi Kim, Like said, some ppl decide to use a certain product b/c it's covered by their insurance. The younger a baby is banded the better and faster the correction. > > > > > > > > > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. passive > > > banding? > > > > > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > > > > > > > > > Thanks, > > > > > Kim > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >

Guest guest
Hi Kim, It's SUPER important that you throughly interview any potential orthotists. Experience is KEY when it comes to bands and helmets. Ask for before and after pics of prior patients, how many babies he/she has successfully treated, and references. You may just have to travel to find an experienced ortho. We have had more than one baby's head get worse due to an inexperienced ortho. > > > > > > Thanks for the explanation . Guest guest
Well, I'm hoping to find out more of what they think when we go for our re-eval in Jan. I am thinking his head is looking better, but I'm not sure how objective I am...maybe just hopeful! Guest guest
Kim, It depends on where you go. Some providers only do active bands other only do passive. Usually local helmets are passive while the " national brands " are active. DOC band, Starband and Hanger are active. However, the STARband can be " made " to be passive. na, 2 1/2 yrs, DOC Grad Feb 04 Kiersten, 6 mos, Repo & Tort www.thefilyaws.com/plagio/plagio.html > > > > > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. passive > banding? > > > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > > > > > Thanks, > > > Kim > > > > > >

Guest guest
Kim, We haven't heard of any negative side effects from a well fitting band - passive or active. Active seems to work faster and " better " . Some folks don't have an active option in their area or approved by their insurance. Some docs don't believe in active vs passive. There are lots of factors but none would be due to negative side effects in a young child. na, 2 1/2 yrs, DOC Grad Feb 04 Kiersten, 6 mos, Repo & Tort www.thefilyaws.com/plagio/plagio.html > > > > > > > > > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. passive > > > banding? > > > > > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > > > > > > > > > Thanks, > > > > > Kim > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
