Guest guest
Hi Kim, A passive band is just that, passive. It relies totally on growth, it sits on the baby's head and eventually the baby's head will grow into the shape of the helmet, round. They are ok for babies 6 months and under as that is when the head is growing the fastest. Once a baby hits 6 months old grow slows down considerably. An active band redirects the growth of the head through gentle pressure not felt by the baby. Active bands are good for babies up until 24 months, usually. They also work faster than passive helmets. Take care, > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. passive banding? > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > Thanks, > Kim >

Guest guest
Kim, A passive band won't have holding points. I called about one when we were looking to band Cece. The ortho told me it just keeps them off the flat spot. > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. passive banding? > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > Thanks, > Kim >

Guest guest
So are you saying that in most cases if your baby is younger than 6 months they will automatically give the child a passive helmet or does it depend purely the case/severity? Thanks, Kim > > > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. passive banding? > > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > > > Thanks, > > Kim > > >

Guest guest
This doesn't sound any better than repo. Except of course it ensures they will not directly on the flat spot, right? > > > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. passive banding? > > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > > > Thanks, > > Kim > > >

Guest guest
Hi Kim, It totally depends on the place you go. Some places will put an 8 month old in a passive helmet. They'll have to wear it longer than if they were put into an active helmet. Most babies only wear an active band for 4.5 months. We've had memebers here whose babies had moderate plagio and were in a passive helmet for over a year. It really is YOUR choice to make, if you don't want your baby in a passive helmet tell your doc. If you don't want to your baby in an active band tell your doc. It's your decision what product, if any you use. Take care, > > > > > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. passive > banding? > > > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > > > > > Thanks, > > > Kim > > > > > >
Guest guest
Kim, You decide which type to get. Of course insurance might not completely agree with you, but that's a different story altogether. My son got casted for his DOC Band the day he turned 5 months. > > > > > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. passive > banding? > > > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > > > > > Thanks, > > > Kim > > > > > >

Guest guest
If length of time in the helmet is a matter of active vs passive, wouldn't everyone automatically choose active? I guess I'm just wondering if their could be negative side effects to the active helmet at such a young age. kim > > > > > > > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. passive > > banding? > > > > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > > > > > > > Thanks, > > > > Kim > > > > > > > > > >

Guest guest
We have our re-eval on Jan 9th (Ethan will be 15wks at that point). I guess it is a good thing, if insurance could delay the process by a month or so. I haven't yet investigated our insurance. I suppose I should start laying the groundwork regardless. Thanks, kim > > > > > > > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. passive > > banding? > > > > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > > > > > > > Thanks, > > > > Kim > > > > > > > > > >

Guest guest
Kim, That's why it's important to find a clinician/orthotist who is skilled and trained in working with bands. Some people choose passive bands because that is their only option locally. The passive ones are cheaper and often require less adjustments so there are less appointments. > > > > > > > > > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. passive > > > banding? > > > > > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > > > > > > > > > Thanks, > > > > > Kim > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >

Guest guest
Thanks for the explanation . In looking at the database spec for MI - I see what you mean, mostly passive. > > > > > > > > > > > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. > passive > > > > banding? > > > > > > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > > > > > > > > > > > Thanks, > > > > > > Kim > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >

I've met several parents at Straight Ahead in Cleveland who come from MI too. And of course some people head over to Chicago to go to CT too. Guest guest
I noticed the different locations. Just don't know if I can see traveling that far. I mean we may have to go multiple times with fittings, adjustments, etc...from what I have read. Those locations are at least 3 hours from where we are. Hope that doesn't sound unwilling. We will see what our area has to offer first and if not satisfied look elsewhere. It's been really nice to be able to become more educated by talking on this forum and through all the information this group provides. A lot of leg work has already been done for me right here...I thank you all for that!!! Kim > > > > Thanks for the explanation . Guest guest
I have to say that just like active helmets/bands, there are different types of passive helmets. Some are just a shell, others have foam inside, etc. My son had a passive helmet with a foam interior so that adjustments could be made if necessary. In general, passive helmets are ususally looser than active helmets because they don't have holding points, per se. Some passive helmets require casting, while others are pre-sized. Connor got his helmet (actually looks more like a band) at 5 1/2 months (there weren't any active helmet options near us at the time) with approx. 10mm of assymetry. We were originally told that it would take 6 months for treatment, but he was actually done in 3. The first 2 months he didn't have much growth, but the final month he apparently had a growth spurt. With a passive helmet, vistits to the orthotist are every 3-4 weeks, compared to 1-2 with 'active' helmets, although we were told to watch for red spots. I kind of think Connor's helmet was somewhere inbetween a shell that's grown into and an a more active type of helmet. Anyway, if your interested, there are photos of the PPO helmet in the Files section under Helmet and Band brand photos. Connor did end up getting good correction with the helmet. He went from 10mm to 3mm in the helmet and improved more after graduation. I think a baby with moderate or worse plagio over 6 months would be better off with a more active type of helmet or band, but for Connor's mild/moderate case the passive helmet worked just fine. Connor (PPO helmet grad 8/04, tort resolved, mild craniofacial microsomia) > > > > > > Can anyone give me a quick lesson on the active vs. passive > banding? > > > Why they decide on one vs the other? pros and cons? > > > > > > Thanks, > > > Kim > > > > > >
