Guest guest
Hello. There is usually a chance of it somewhat correcting on its own, however, there is no guarantee. It sounds as if your Son may also have torticollis which is a shortening of the neck muscle on one side. Is he able to turn his head all the way to the left? If it seems as if he is having trouble with tunring his head, always favors turning it to one side and/or doesn't have a good range of motion, you will want to talk to the Dr about Physical Therapy. Torticollis is a common cause of plagiocephaly. At your Son's age, time is of the essence, as far as starting Helmet therapy. If you are not happy with how his head looks now, pursuing helmet therapy would be in your best interest, since there is no guarantee it will improve on its own. Yes, helmet therapy can be expensive though Insurance often covers it (all or in part), though sometimes you have to fight to get the coverage. Others have also taken out loans and/or had fundraisers to raise the $ when their Insurance didn't cover it. What you have to think of is if you didn't do anything, and your Son's head shape never improves... would you regret it and/or feel guilty later? If the answer is yes, then it would be a good idea to get the ball rolling as soon as possible. At 8 months old, you most likely would not really see results with repositioning him, as the Dr suggested to you. I have a friend whose Son had moderate to severe plagiocephaly as a baby. She listened to the Dr when they said it would " round out on its own " and she did nothing for him. He is now 4 years old, still has a mishapen head, misaligned ears and some facial asymmetry. I don't mean to scare you or upset you... but you still have time to correct it now. Guest guest
Don't feel bad about this...most PEDs dismiss plagio and say " it will round out, " which it will to some degree. It really depends on the severity. From what I'm told, a child's head forms all the way until they're 4-5yrs old. However, what makes this so difficult is that untreated plagio really is subjective. It may round out to where you/he don't notice it with hair...or it may not round as much as you'd like and bother him. It's in the eye of the beholder-my dad didn't think my son's looked " that bad " but it was very noticable to me(of course WE as moms notice every scrape, bruise, mole!). If you want to pursue this, then I would look into getting an assesment from Cranial Tech or Starband or another place. You can call your PED and just ask for a referrel(yes, it may be time to become " hysterical mom " and demanding!). I don't think that Cranial Tech requires a referrel for the first visit/assessment(don't quote me on that), but they will need a letter of medical necessity if you decide to do it. If you can, I would just get an assessment somewhere and get measurements to have an informed decision. This is a difficult thing to go through...so if you can, explore all of your options. Good luck! Keep us posted! Bye, (Max DOCbanded 2/7) > > My son will be 8 months old on the 22nd and his head is misshapen on > the right side of the back (the side that he favors). Guest guest
Thank you so much to both of you ladies for your replies. I am switching peds and am going to call this morning to make an appointment with the new ped. I want him looked at right away. I was thinking about it a lot and exactly what you said, I can't imagine when he's older resenting us because we didn't do something to " fix " him early on. I just really wish I would have started researching earlier on so we could have been doing treatment already rather than waiting til now. But I really believed my ped when he told me his head would correct itself naturally. The ped also told us he did not have tort when we asked about him favoring one side but I beg to differ now. The way he holds his head, he always has it cocked to one side. I took pictures of his head, how do I post them here? I'd like to get opinions on if you think it is moderate or severe. Thanks for your help! > > > > My son will be 8 months old on the 22nd and his head is misshapen on > > the right side of the back (the side that he favors). Guest guest
I agree with Jen. Helmet therapy is the most effective and quickest means to correct plagiocephaly. Forget what the doctor or doctors are telling or advising you for a moment. Put yourself in the driver's seat with your son's condition. What do you think about your son's head? Does it bother you? Do you notice the plagiocephaly? If so, look into helmet therapy. Consider the consequences if you do or do not get your son a band. Will the shape stay the same, improve or worsen if you do or do not get the band, bearing in mind that there are no guarantees in life? What are your expectations about your son's head? If you need reassurance, get a second or third opinion. If possible, see a cranial facial specialist. Ask the doctors if this was their FIRST child or grandchild and they had flattening and facial asymmetry, what would they do? How long would they wait before pursuing helmet therapy? Essentially, you want to ask what they would do in your shoes. However, I think it's important to stipulate if it was their first child or grandchild because people are generally quicker to react and less apt let conditions slide with a firstborn, but, of course, that's only my opinion. Remember none of us want our babies to wear a helmet but we realize it may be a necessary evil like immunization shots. Like many here, I wish my son's head would round out naturally and his facial asymmetry would remedy itself too naturally. However, it hasn't until now and I honestly don't think it will without medical intervention. I'm not looking for perfection, but son has a little baldness of the affected side of his head and his ears, eyes, cheeks, and forehead are misaligned. Personally, I don't think I could live with the guilt if I didn't try to explore all avenues and every possible means within my capacity years down the road, but everyone is different. I say follow your gut instinct and be happy with your decision and don't second guess yourself. At the end of the day, you're the parent; not the doctors. You have to be the advocate for your son and decide what's best for him. Good luck. Carolyn in NYC Mum to Malcolm - 4 mos - plagio and tort Re: Any chance of natural correction? Hello. Guest guest
The same thing has happened to me. I noticed the flattening at 5 weeks of age (left side). My son’s Ped kept telling me that it would round out by the time he was 6 months old. At his 6 month check up he told me that he didn’t like the way it looked. He referred us to a plastic surgeon whom we couldn’t get in to until he was 7 months old (that appt was Monday). He basically told us that it was a mild case and it was our decision as to whether we wanted to do helmet therapy. He said that he could guarantee that it wouldn’t get any worse but he couldn’t tell me how much better it would get. His eyes, nose, and mouth are all symmetric but his ears are slightly off. We were faced with a tough decision, but we have decided to do what we can while we can and go ahead with the helmet therapy. We have an appt on Monday for a consultation and we won’t actually get the helmet until 3 weeks after that…so he will be 8 months when he actually gets it. I blame the Ped for letting this go on too long! I’m not looking forward to this at all. This support group has given me a lot of insight and confidence. Guest guest
Hi skytza, Our ped kept ignoring me everytime I mentioned baby's head... " it'll round out on it's own " " his hair will cover it " ... <--I hate that! One time he told me " what is it whith all these moms and baby's heads? " Next visit I just came armed with a lot of info from the net and I brought my husband to block the door until we got a prescription to see a especialist. :) But we didn't change peds because of that, we like him otherwise, so my question is: do you have to change peds to get a Rx? Time is of the essence. Get a free consult at CT, inform yourself and if you decide to do something about it don't waste any time. skytza, did you use to post at Baby and Me? Guest guest
Good for you! I'm glad that you are going to pursue things and go see a new ped. You can still see very good correction with a band at your Son's age. Good luck with everything! You can post pics in the photo section under plagio babies (and then the first letter of your Son's first name. Just open that folder, and click on add picture. If you have any problems, the moderators should be able to help you add the pics. Guest guest
I didn't like our ped much anyway. They screwed up our billing and were sending the info to the wrong insurance. Bunch of idiots if you ask me. I wanted to switch anyway. We did get an appointment for 4:50 today at the new ped already. I'm definitely going in there armed with info! If they brush me off too I'm going to blow my top. And by the way, yes I did used to post at Baby & Me. Guest guest
You may recieve some natural correction over time, but this is usually slight and will probably not realign the ears or correct the bulging enough that you would say it's all gone now. Contact your insurance company and see if they cover any type of band. You can also ask other how they came up with ways to fundraise for thiers. Some people have gone to thier churches and the church will take up a collection, there are many ways to get help outside the normal ways....be creative. Good Luck. Guest guest
skytza, I often wondered what happened to you. If I recall correctly, there were a few bumps on the road during your pregnancy. Glad to hear your baby is ok, we were pretty worried about you. Several members at BAM (me included) asked about you and somebody said you were banned from the forums, is this true? 0_0 Anyways, good luck getting all your referrals. We had to take an x- ray and see a neuro surgeon before we could get the band. It seemed like a struggle at first and we had to make a million phone calls but once they approved it everything moved really fast. best of luck to you and your baby. Guest guest
Thanks Tulip. We didn't have any luck at the new ped yesterday as you can tell from my latest post. Tomorrow I am going to call the NS and see what they say. Were you in the August Babies group on BAM? Yes quite a few of us were banned from there when we joined their " enemy " site after all the stuff with Augustmommy2005 happened (remember that??). I think that's around when things were really going bad with my pregnancy but he amazed all of the doctors and made it here safe! He was born at 37 weeks at 3 lbs 7 oz due to the IUGR and they found out that the umbilical cord had only 2 vessels instead of 3 like it should have. The doctors aren't sure if that's what caused all the problems or not, they think it might have been an infection in my uterus even though I was tested for just about everything you can imagine and came back negative for all of them. But anyway, I'm sorry to hear your baby has to go through this as well. I'm still trying to remember what your user name was.. Tulip just doesn't sound familiar to me. Here's Ethan's website in case you wanted to see a picture (or a million!) of him: http://www.bundleofjoys.com/sites/ethan Take Care! > > > > > > > > > > > > My son will be 8 months old on the 22nd and his head is > > > > misshapen on > > > > > > the right side of the back (the side that he favors). Guest guest
Sorry to hear about the new ped. I just read your new post and looked at your pictures. I'm very happy for you and Ethan. I forgot to say before, my name @ BAM is sapphires, I didn't post that much so I don't know if you remember me, but I read a lot of your posts. I was part of the august thread but I missed all the action because they deleted a lot of stuff and when I asked for a link to the other site my post got deleted too. LOL oh well, it's good to hear from you. Looking at the pics you posted here, it seems like Ethan may have some tort? maybe some physical therapy could help? by all means go to CT even if it's a drive. I have to drive 2 hours to see our OT, so I understand that it's difficult, especially for you working full time. This site has a lot of good info, maybe in the files or database sections you can find a good NS in your area. Also, look for info on agressive positioning. It's not easy to be vigilant at all times but I'm positive it helped baby's head a lot while we waited for his appointments. Good luck, remember our little miracles deserve all of our efforts. Guest guest
Okay so here is my totally unprofessional opinion... I looked at the pictures, and it seems that his head might be longer front to back and perhaps scaphocephalic. This, as I have read, happens to babies who have spent time in the NICU because they have very little muscle control and lay flat on the sides of their head for extended periods of time. It can happen to other babies as well, but is uncommon. (My daughter is this way, but only because she sucks her thumb and turns her head to the side as she sleep. She is definitely a creature of habit!!) In addition to this basic head shape it looks to me like there is also some plagio for Ethan. it looks like the right side of his forehead and cheek are pushed forward and perhaps his ears are misaligned. It also looks like there may be some asymmetry of the eyes, but it might just be the picture. YOU have to be the judge. This is only what I can see from the pictures. I certainly can't see him in person. By the way, he has the cutest chin. I love it!! And, there are some adorable pictures on your website!!! What a cutie pie who looks like he loves life!!! Please don't be upset if this sounds harsh. I may be totally off!!! It just sounds and looks similar to what Sophie, my daughter, has. Let me know what you think! Sophie - STAR bivalve 3/15 P.S. It may take a different type of helmet to correct this if he has scaphocephaly.... > > > > > > > > > > > > > > My son will be 8 months old on the 22nd and his head is > > > > > misshapen on > > > > > > > the right side of the back (the side that he favors). > His > > > ears > > > > > are not > > > > > > > symmetrical and the other side of his head seems to > bulge > > > out > > > > a > > > > > little > > > > > > > bit.
