Guest guest
Hi everyone, there have been a few requests for the name of my supplier, but I'm afraid I am writing from South Africa, so the name would not help you, but any of the large Chemical or Pharmaceutical companies in your business index will stock all these sorts of things. Do you have a company called " Merck " ? They keep everything you could need, but if not, don't be put off by the fact that they are huge and you are little - down here anyway, they have been surprisingly helpful. To get something like lye (sodium hydroxide) cheaply, you will have to buy 25 kgs of it, and then either keep it in a big airtight sealed plastic container, or pack it out (wearing mask and gloves) into small containers. Good luck. Lez.
Guest guest
LaNita~ Thanks for the source! What have you been making where you use the SDA ? The things that come to mind for me would be men's pre-shave, men's and women's colognes and/or perfumes, bath splashes, linen and room sprays, body sprays. Are you already making those? Would love to hear about it if so! Guest guest
No, Everclear is not denatured alcohol... " denatured " means ingredients have been added to make it poisonous to drink. My personal opinion is that Everclear isn't drinkable in the first place, but the ATF seems to think otherwise! ;-) Cat
Guest guest
I use the vodka myself, beings I canott find the denatured alcohol. I was told that what you get at the paint supply stores is not the same as what you need for the body spray. Also using vodka you canott legally sell this. So I am on the search for denatured alcohol myself. Janet > Can anyone tell me if using 100 proof vodka will be ok to use in > place of denatured alcohol? Guest guest
, The denatured alchol that you found at Home Depot is NOT the same, DON'T use it. Your vodka will work fine and if you can find it Everclear is even better. cheetahkita <cheetahkita@...> wrote:Can anyone tell me if using 100 proof vodka will be ok to use in place of denatured alcohol? Guest guest
http://www.plantessence.com/alcohol.html According to the Food and Drug Administration, if a product is used on the body (all cosmetics), and contains alcohol (ethyl alcohol), it MUST be specially denatured and labeled as such. Non-denatured, or " tax-paid " , ethyl alcohol may be used in herbal tinctures or cough syrup preparations because these will be ingested by the consumer. But, products used externally (cosmetics and body care products) must use SDA's. We recommend that you take a moment to check labels on products that you currently purchase. To use SD alcohols, the manufacturer must apply for a permit, from the BATF, and pay an annual users fee of at least $250. This process is required just to be allowed to purchase SD alcohols, the cost of the alcohol is an additional expense. The only conciliation to this, is that SD alcohol is cheaper than tax-paid alcohol.

Guest guest
Hi , What you buy in the hardware cannot be used. I am not familiar with what is available in the States, but in her book " Transparent Soapmaking " Failor says " Scientific supply houses sell denatured ethanol in gallon containers .... When ordering denatured alcohol be sure to specify SDA (specially denatured alcohol) 3A or SDA3C, two cosmetic grades approved by FDA. Both have trace amounts of isopropyl alcohol and methanol " . She lists Pharmco Products www.pharmco-prod.com as suppliers of 5 gallon containers of SDA-3A 1 per year without permit. HTH. Guest guest
What is the difference between denatured alcohol from Home Depot and other denatured alcohol? From what I understand denatured alcohol is a mixture of ethyl and methyl alcohols. And what would happen if you used the stuff from Home Depot and why? Though it may look like I'm being a smart ass, I'm not. I just want to be educated on this matter. By the way. I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Randy. I go by Talzarich online. I'm new to the list and look forward to the conversations. Talzarich

Guest guest
I searched for denatured alcohol and came up with Everclear, unfortunately their are rules and regulation to follow when using alcohol in products that are sold to the public. Guest guest
This question is going around, my husband said denatured alcohol is denatured alcohol and he said its all the same. So I am also looking for someone to explain the difference. Marti Marti Savon de Fermier

Guest guest
Hi Randy~ I too am trying to figure this out. Makes things difficult when you can't easily find what you need. I still need to find out what Everclear is. Can this be bought at a pharmacy or in the state/liqour store. >shrugging shoulders< RE: Re: Denatured alcohol > What is the difference between denatured alcohol from Home Depot and > other denatured alcohol? Guest guest
IMHO-- I personally can't begin to fathom using denatured alcohol for linen spray. Yes it can be found at Home Depot etc and I believe even Wall Mart. I use it to melt (YES _ MELT) old varnish from furniture to refinish it. It gets sticky fast on the varnish so it is a process of rub on - wipe off and repeat. I'm almost afraid if some of the linen spray got on a headboard for example that it could damage it. I haven't seen a recipe calling for it though. Is it mixed with something else to dilute it? Also, it is kinda of harsh and drying to the hands!! Any that's my opinion for what it's worth. Sunnye Denatured alcohol Can anyone tell me if using 100 proof vodka will be ok to use in place of denatured alcohol? I have no clue where to find the above. I've been searching the internet and it seems it MAY be found in places like HOME DEPOT in the paint section. Has anyone ever used the above to make linen sprays? I make a body mist where I use Distilled Witch Hazel and other moisturizing properties.< Where did you find distilled witch hazel? I've used witch hazel hydrosol, but I'd like to find a witch hazel that doesn't have alcohol...unlike the stuff at the drug store [Dickinson's] which is distilled with added alcohol [the final product is 14% alcohol]. Guest guest
> Thank you ! What is EVERCLEAR and where do you find it? Appreciate > your help! Some of the larger liquor stores stock it, my kids when they were at college used it in their fruit punches as it is supposedly tasteless and and being the highest proof liquor one can buy they get horribly drunk faster, thankfully they are now all married and have kids of their own. Guest guest
Marti, All denatured alcohol is not the same. What you need for cosmetics and soaps is specially denatured ie SDA 3A and SDA 3C. 3A stands for 100 parts ethanol to 5 parts methyl alcohol. 3C is 100 parts ethanold to 5 parts isopropyl alcohol. You wouldn't want the paint store variety on your skin. Anne http://www.annelees.com/supplies/sheabutter.html
Guest guest
Just remember that not all states sell everclear because it is 180 proof making it 90% alcohol. Just call a liquor store and ask if they have it. E. Chapman Storm n Rose Creations Bath and Body Products and Custom Candles from " The Land of Ah's " stormnrose@...
