Guest guest
Hi Debbie, My son is 10 mos now and we were in the exact same situation you are in now. He always wanted to only turn right and sleeping, sitting, laying down, anything- his head always fell right. When he turned 4 mos his head shape became so noticeably flat in the back right we took him to our ped. and she said dont worry about it, it will round out (ya, right). But she gave me a referral for a specialist at Childrens in Boston anyways because I wouldnt give up on it. The Dr at Childrens diagnosed him with right torticollis and set us up with a physical therapist to start aggressive repositiong techniques. This worked for a month or so but then my son became too strong (and willful!) so that didnt work anymore. The flatness did get somewhat better with repositioning but was still pretty noticeable. At that point we saw a neurosurgeon at Childrens who assessed that Aidan has mild to moderate plagiocephaly (8-9 mm) and wrote him a script for a band. He has been in it for about 6 weeks and we are seeing some nice rounding. He ortho estimates about another month or so he'll be done. Get the ball rolling now, hes the perfect age now to get great results and not have to be in the helmet that long. If your son is anything like mine, the repositioning is going to get old real fast and he will not be so agreeable in about a month or so, then you may start to see some regression like we did. The helmet will hurt you more than it will him! If you keep on top of the way it fits daily, it will never be uncomfortable for him. Follow up is key to maximum comfort and good results. Keep us posted! beth Aidan, 10 mos, right plagio and tort. Starband since 1/20/06 Childrens Hospital, Boston > > Hello Group! I am so glad to have found a group relating to this > issue. Guest guest
Welcome We've had many members go for consults at CT to be told a band isn't necessary or to continue to try repositioning. My son got his band at 5 mo and 4 days. He was severe but got amazing correction at that young age. You can see his before and after DOC band pictures in the photos section. Good luck with your decision! Mom to Dane (4 yo) and Cece (14 mo) DOC Grads

Guest guest
Cranial Tech is a trustworthy company. If there was any doubt they would have told you it was questionable. If he is a candidate and you have any doubts about his headshape then I would go for it. He's at a great age for the band to work well and quickly. Both of my girls have worn bands. Wow what a difference. It doesn't hurt. The worst part is the casting. My oldest was casted 3 times and the youngest once so far but she will get an exit cast too. They don't like it but it doesn't hurt. I've found a lollipop works great for keeping them happy during the casting. I just posted an update on Kiersten. I mentioned we had na, my oldest, remeasured. Post graduation she had improved 1 mm in ears and cranial vault. She graduated at 8 1/2 months. At that age she was only on her head while sleeping and she never slept in the same position long. So my whole thought on repo is that it can work on the very young (less than 6 months). If you do your best to do aggressive repo before the age of 6 months and see little to no improvement then it's time to move on. However, if you see good improvement then it's rational to keep trying for a little while longer (until maybe 8-9 months). We repoed both my daughters, na from 3 months - 4 1/2 months (no change). Kiersten we did preventative repo from birth no help. Well in both cases we probably prevented them from being severe. They both had tort. Tort is a huge influence in repo success. Tort makes it very hard. I would suggest if you aren't quite sure then set a deadline for repo success. Get all your paperwork done for the band. Get your appointments made and insurance approval. Be as diligent as possible on the repo and then go back to CT for a re-eval. If it doesn't meet your pre-set success level then go for the doc band. In the meantime get him into PT for the tort. It will help with the repo. By loosening the muslces you allow the head to move freely into the desired shape - does that make sense? na, DOC Grad Feb 04, Tort Resolved Kiersten, DOC Band 1/10/06, Tort www.thefilyaws.com/plagio/plagio.html > > Hello Group! Guest guest
I know I am brand new to the group by thought I'd jump in. My son was four months old when I noticed his head was really flat and there was a bulge on one side. I brought it up to the pediatrician and we tried repositioning. By seven months, it had gotten better but was still pretty bad. AGain, our doctor said to wait. WE were very worried and didn't know what to do but trusted her. Then we saw an article in the paper about plagiocephaly. The person went to Cranial Technologies in Paramus NJ. I met her in the bookstore and she had wonderful things to say about the company. I made my appointment right before Jake's first birthday. The casting is a little stressful but does not hurt them. Since then, I've researched this a lot and found the babies do very well and it does not hurt them. Jake is doing great. My one regret? That I didn't look into it sooner because the younger they are, the less time and more growth opportunity for the corrections. Jake is 13 months old - it took about three weeks to get insurance approval through Aetna. He'll need to wear it for four months. I would recommend Cranial Tech - they've been great. -- In Plagiocephaly , " " <monicash@...> wrote: > > Cranial Tech is a trustworthy company. Guest guest
Hi Debbie, My son is 5 months old and he has torticollis and plagio (the flatness of the head). I agree with the previous postings that it is so important to go to physical therapy to get treated for the torticollis. The torticollis will cause his neck to be weak and limit your son's rotation; therefore, causing him to always lay on the flat spot. Torticollis can also cause delays in meeting milestones (crawling, sitting, walking etc.) because of the balance, perception and general muscle weakness. In regards to the plagio, my son's case was very mild according to Cranial Tech. We found them to be completely fair in assessing my son's plagio and they basically said that the Doc Band was our choice. We ended up getting it just because we didn't want to risk any flatness. We got the band on Monday and it has been great. I was so worried it was going to effect my VERY HAPPY son but it hasn't at all. He still smiles and laughs all of the time. It's been a great experience and believe it or not...after just one week, we see improvement. mom to 5 mos (tort and plagio) > > Hello Group!
