Guest guest
Hi and welcome to the group. Shifting is normal and especially while sleeping/rolling. However, normal shifting is less than +/- 1 " and it doesn't interfere with ears or eyes. It sounds a little big. I would be more concerned about the eye than the ear but it just doesn't sound like a good fit. Can you post some photos so we can get a good idea of your concerns? The head does grow into the helmet but you never want it to big because if it shifts too much you may " correct " the wrong area. na, DOC Grad Feb 04, Tort Resolved Kiersten, DOC Band 1/10/06, Tort www.thefilyaws.com --- In Plagiocephaly , " Fuller " <seanfuller@...> wrote: > > Hi, > > This group was recommended to us while in the waiting area at NOPCO > in Boston's Children's Hospital. > > Our son was fitted for his Starband helmet six days ago and overall > has adjusted pretty well to it. Guest guest
Thanks for the feedback. I have not yet taken any pictures, but will do that over the next day or so. If the same issue happens again tonight, we will be going for another adjustment tomorrow. His plagio is back left side, so they have the right side of his head " covered " more closely as a result. The helmet comes far closer to the right eye than left on purpose because of this. Seemed they were cautious to make too many adjustments yesterday in fear of impacting the effect of the helmet. The time he wears this during sleep should account for more than 1/2 the time is in the helmet each day, and the only time he is really on his back. To me, how it fits while in that position is most crucial. Thanks again! > > > > Hi, > > > > This group was recommended to us while in the waiting area at > NOPCO > > in Boston's Children's Hospital. > > > > Our son was fitted for his Starband helmet six days ago and > overall > > has adjusted pretty well to it. Guest guest
, It sounds to me that if it is still shifting that much you need to go back and get another adjustment done. At no time should his helmet be blocking his vision or covering up an ear. It sometimes takes a couple of adjustments to get it just right at first. Hope things get better for you guys. Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the group! While shifting is very common in bands, as much as you're describing is a big red flag. I'd love to see a picture of what is happening if you can post one. Based on your description though, the helmet sounds too big. A helmet that is too big can't be fixed--it's because of a bad cast or scan. They may try to add foam, but you don't want them to try and fix their mistake like that--you need to demand a rescan/cast if you truly feel it's too big as well. Have you looked at www.orthomerica.com to see what a STARband should fit like? The helmet should never cover an eye or fold an ear, even when shifting. I wouldn't even let him sleep in it (or wear it at all) if it's shifting enough to rotate on his head b/c it could be a suffocation hazard. I'm sure you've read on here that NOPCO hasn't had the best reputation on this group either, so I'd encourage you to be VERY proactive in your son's care. Familiarize yourself w/all the info you can on the STARband so you know your facts and what a proper fit should look like and press NOPCO until get that! At your son's age you don't want to waste time, so I hope things get cleared up quickly for you! We live on the Cape, did a consult at NOPCO, but ended up deciding on Cranial Tech in Connecticut. My daughter's story is on her website below if you're interested. Guest guest
, I hope your son has a better night tonight with that band. it definitely sounds too big for him if it is spinning that far around on his head. Definitely go in for an adjustment tomorrow. If it were me I wouldn't call, I would just go. And if you are not satisfied with the fit after the adjustment, you are well within your rights to request another casting and a whole new helmet. Do whatever you have to in order to get your son's head the best possible correction. Follow your gut instinct. you are your child's best advocate. Best wishes and please let us know how it goes tonight, and also tomorrow if you go in for an adjustment. Guest guest
All, Thanks again for the information and words of support. Last night did not go any better; in fact he was never able to get to sleep due to the helmet last night and we just let him sleep without it. We are going to Children's today to meet with the orthotist; and armed with the information you have all provided will be better prepared for this discussion. Hopefully the helmet does not need to be replaced, and can be adjusted. I would really hate to have wasted the past week, and have to wait another 2 weeks to get another helmet. I will keep you posted on how we make out today - and hopefully report Cameron slept peacefully last night as he does without the Starband. > > > > > > > > Hi, > > > > > > > > This group was recommended to us while in the waiting area at > > > NOPCO > > > > in Boston's Children's Hospital. > > > > > > > > Our son was fitted for his Starband helmet six days ago and > > > overall > > > > has adjusted pretty well to it. Guest guest
Good luck ! I hope things work out well at your next appointment. If you find a new helmet is the only solution..pls note that according to a PDF found on the ORTHOMERICA website...a band can be made in 3-5 days after receiving the results of a new scan via email. I'm sure they could do a quick turnaround for you if need be since your ortho may have ruined the first helmet. Here's the link: http://www.orthomerica.com/pdf/catalog/us/sec_1_04d_custom.pdf I hope this helps! Again..Good luck! Stay strong. Guest guest
Hi all, Just wanted to give you all an update. We took Cameron back to NOPCO today to get this corrected once and for all. Several adjustments were made, along with a cut or two to ensure a better fit. Initially, the helmet appears to fit better than it ever has. They also tested with him lying down in the stroller, and on a table. In addition they took a new scan and will order another helmet if this one continues to have issues. Thanks again to everyone that offered support and information. Hopefully Cameron is able to sleep tonight in the Starband and wear it for the 23 hours he is supposed to. > > > > Hi, > > > > This group was recommended to us while in the waiting area at NOPCO > > in Boston's Children's Hospital. > > > > Our son was fitted for his Starband helmet six days ago and overall > > has adjusted pretty well to it. Guest guest
Hi , Great news! Sounds like you have all bases covered.
