There is a service in West Texas that has a protocol

with Atropine as an additive for Acute Asthma. But,if I

recall correctly,it is used in conjunction with 3cc

Albutrol/.01 mg Atropine.

We used to use atropine all the time until Atrovent came out. It complements

the beta 2 effects of the beta agonists by its anticholinergic effects. You

put 1.0 mg in with albuterol or a similar beta agonist. You can not repeat

the atropine very often (every 4-6 hours) unlike the beta agonist that can

be repeated or given continuously.

I hope you know in detail how Atrovent works if you are administering it.

Re: Nebulized Atropine For Asthma

We use ipatropium [sp?] along with the albuterol [1:1] in a nebulizer. I

understand the ipatropium has some atropine-like properties and effects.

,

Why not expand your statement to include ALL drugs that are being

administered by EMS? How many folks who are pushing any of the drugs in the

standard

EMS formulary can readily explain their mechanisms of action?

Hope your Boxing Day was enjoyable.
