We've heard from some parents who use something other than alcohol encounter skin problems that disappear when they switch to the alcohol. I'm sure you are frustrated Both my banded babies have sensitive skin. Dane actually was allergic to disposable diapers! We didn't have skin issues while banded. We washed their head with Aveeno oatmeal pouches and only cleaned the bands with 91% alcohol. Dermatologist thought that he was allergic to the lining of the helmet (StarBand) and suggested that he wear a "stocking cap" between his skin and the helmet. When I brought this up to ortho, they very quickly said NO because a wrinkle or fold could happen, cause a pressure point, and we wouldn't know it until the next time we took the helmet off. Orthomerica offered to make a new helmet with a different liner but we haven't done this yet. I and ortho don't feel that he is allergic to the lining because his spots only occurred in a couple of areas (a rather large spot did not even come into contact with the helmet). We thought he was either reacting to his perspiration or the shampoo and alcohol were too harsh to his skin. We switched to Aveeno shampoo and diluted the alcohol with water in half to clean the helmet. It's been about two or three weeks since and so far so good. We keep a very close eye on him and sometimes it feels like I'm a monkey looking for bugs on another monkey's head! Good luck and trust me, it gets better! I know that we never used soap on the Doc bands because the small residue that soap leaves in the foam can build up and cause bacteria to grow and cause a bacterial rash.
