Guest guest
Oh, I forgot to add something our PT said today in my last message. Our physical therapist said that she thought my son Malcolm’s flattening was worse this week than last. I honestly can tell the difference, even from my weekly photos. She implied that Malcolm’s flattening was worse because I haven’t been applying pressure with my fingertips underneath the base of Malcolm’s skull. Thus she’s implying that my son’s condition is within my power to fix and that I haven’t been diligent enough. I’m getting to my wits’ ends with this and feeling thoroughly miserable in the process. Malcolm is my first child and I already feel incompetent as it is without a PT chastising me. Tell me this is going to get better because it’s looking pretty bleak from my perspective today. Thanks for letting me vent my frustrations. Carolyn Fox in NYC Mum to Malcolm – 4 months old – plagio and tort

Guest guest
Carolyn- It sounds like Malcolm's head is doing the same thing Braden's did...his just got flatter despite all of our efforts. If you feel you have done a good job then ignore your PT. Plus think about it this way, to correct a plagio baby, they must wear a band 23 hours per day. If they do not wear the band 23 hours per day they will not see the proper correction if any at all. That being said, it is a little hard to belive that applying pressure to the base of his skull would fix everything. Now, I don't know anything about PT but it just seems odd to me. Guest guest
Carolyn, That is complete nonsense that she is saying this. I've held all three of my kids quite a bit. However I was never able to sit there and hold their skulls all day. My gosh I'd have carpal tunnel! Please don't let this woman get you down. Can you switch to another PT? Guest guest
His head isn't improving b/c you're not holding his skull all day! Please don't feel like you are obligated to stay with this PT. My father is a Dr and my husband runs PT clinics and hospitals and I can tell you that compatable personalities is a MUST! Especially in the healthcare industry-even if she's right(and I seriously doubt it), you need to find a PT that is encouraging, not discouraging. If this PT is making your life more stressful, then maybe it's time to " break-up " with her and call the PED for another recommendation. There are tons of competant PTs out there. You absolutely are not an imcompetent mother! If plagio was caused by imcompetence....then we'd all be in the dog house!!! I believe that there just isn't enough information out there. Not enough studies, not enough PED's that warn about repositioning, not enough support for us etc. In your first message you said that both the PED and CT said there was visible flattening and asymmetry...I would listen to them, not the PT. Go ahead and look into banding and don't let a PT make you second guess yourself. If it's visible, then it needs to be activly addressed with something that will protect and correct. Good luck!
